Jean Michel Jarre

Sorry to all those who find his stuff annoying, cheesy, and
overly bombastic...I just had to start a new thread about
Jarre. :-)

He was actually the first "electronic" artist I listened to
(after being mainly into classical music during my
childhood) and I've always liked many of his albums, in
particular Oxygene 70-13, Zoolook, Equinox, and Chronologie.

Heheh. Well, I see no incombatibility between his stuff and
the music discussed here!

well, in that case moby is compatible as well (i secretly
like some of his songs as well), but people still think he's
a jerk, so i started to think that as well now..i've been
here for +3years..

imho, Jean Michel Jarre, for all his cheese, is ligh years
ahead of Moby. Although I must admit to liking the
occasional Moby song too. ;-)

Provides an nice antidote to Richard Devine-esque music.

CS2x, Thaks for listening to my advice. :-)

You can say what you want i love Jarre, an it will not
change. He`s my musical hero, although I don`t like all his
stuff, he made some very deep, beautifull and innovative
music back in the days (and still does). Many of his works
made me cry, I felt thrilled, inspired etc, etc... even
though he`s music is not always of the highest standard, he
represents the romantic approach to music which will always
be close to my heart.

1. Zoolook
2. Rendez-Vous
3. Oxygene
4. Equinoxe
5. Oxygene 7-13
6. Magnetic Fields
7. Geometry of Love
8. Chronologies
9. Metamorphoses
10. Revolutions

oh, i wasn't comparing their music, it's just a fact that
they're really unpopular here on this board for some
reason..im guessing it's got something to do with
greed..perhaps..

Jean Michel Jarre was the first electronic artist i'd ever
heard - I grew up listening to his stuff because my parents
were into his music.

If it wasn't for the music that I was subjected to at an
early age, I don't think I'd be listening to the stuff I am
currently listening to

Oh my... If you don`t want to get even more annoyed with
Jarre please don`t visit his official website. Over the
years he created a self-promoting institution that doesn`t
fit me at all, and this site is simply shite. On the other
hand, when one had sold over 50 million record, one is
obliged....

But as for a 57 year-old he looks... I don`t get it...

you mean Jeanmicheljarre.com? I don't think he had much
input with that website...but it is appalling. :-(

I'm surprised you put Chronologie so far down the list.
Parts 1-4 are very uplifting and quite unusual in places
(although there are cringeworthy moments, I can forgive them
easily due to the overall quality of the music.)

And what about Waiting for Cousteau? The 42-minute ambient
track on that is lovely.

aahhh, the order is not at all important... I`ve put it so
low because from track 4 the records becomes boring. Waiting
for Cousteau is v. good, but i don`t treat as a proper
record (the third track is superbly intense at the end). The
ambient track is a class of it`s own, I`ve read many books
with it as a background.

It ranges from over-the-top cheesy shite to powerful and
affecting pieces of music. I actually find the majority of
it enjoyable. As a Steve Roach fan, I'm sure you'd appeciate
the 42-minute long "Waiting for Cousteau" track. :)

Glad you enjoyed Fissures! Do you have a favorite track?

I'd reccommend Oxygene, Oxygene 7-13 or Waiting for Cousteau
(only the last track) for the more ambient side of Jarre's
work.

no favorite track as of yet, but it will come, when it comes
to that kind of music, i choose my favorites by the way they
treat my mind while either sleeping or on drugs. they become
special in a sense, sort of sentimental.

Check Zoolook, mostly because of the first and last track,
and Magnetic Fields. And "Souvenir of China" as a separate
track, it`ll give you a good idea of what is his music all
about.

And maybe Geometry of Love, also; the sound is more "modern"
and chilled, with some graeat improvisations.

no, don't check zoolook. apart from it being piss poor, it
isn't representative of his style AT ALL. if you've not
heard anything by him before, listen to oxygene and
equinoxe, and if you like them go on from there.

I can't believe your turning your back on tracks 1 and 2 in
Waiting for Coustou CS2x, Track one always makes my heart
lift and smile while track 2 reminds me passionately of
communist russia.

Rendez Vous 2.

Well I do like tracks 1-3 on WFC but the fourth is the most
subtle and atmospheric imo. Part two is an overlooked epic,
imo.

Well yeah, he does mime at some of his shows.

It doesn't change the fact he's done some damn nice albums,
however. :)

That bill bailey song is pretty funny though.

"But did you see that as a way of getting to where you
wanted to go?"

"Yeah, and then I moved into electronic music. I moved into
the Music Research Centre headed by Pierre Schaeffer, and at
that time you only had two centres One - Musique Concrete,
Pierre Schaeffer and the other one was Stockhausen in Koln
where I went as well in Germany. But I really considered
Pierre Schaeffer as my master."

From an interview. Pretty interesting...

Okay there is a disproportionately large Jarre appreciation
here. It is insane. In an effort to correct this, J M Jarre
is a cock sucking posturing cheese merchant listened to by
new age losers and balding Yes/Genesis fans.
