How a sound can transmit emotions ? Why one can say that melody A is sad and melody B is funny ? And why people have same emotions when listening to some composition ? WHAT causes emotions and why ?
Note: In my opinion, only melody carries emotions, while rhythm only amplifies them.
My hypothesys: Understanding of music (particulary, melody) is a result of averaging of language phonems and words soundings. That's why for example chinese music differes so much from european.

You could ask the same about paintings. Why do they provoke an emmotional response in us? Although music is harder to deal with, as it is more abstract and less obviously connected to experiences in every day life.

A picture associates with real-life sutuation pictured. But what music associates with ? With speech maybe ?

Abstrac picture associates with a very wide range of real-life things - too wide to say that it associates with something certain. And emotion caused by such a picture are uncertain too.
Purely abstract pictures must have no emotional impact because they don't associate with anything.

How a sound can transmit emotions ? it doesn't.
Why one can say that melody A is sad and melody B is funny ? why one can not?
And why people have same emotions when listening to some composition ? stimuli --> response.
WHAT indeed.
causes emotions and why ? the responses of the brain and neurons and chemicals and shit like that. go read an encyclopedia.
Note: In my opinion, only melody carries emotions, while rhythm only amplifies them. that's incredibly unsound logically and false.
My hypothesys: Understanding of music (particulary, melody) is a result of averaging of language phonems and words soundings. That's why for example chinese music differes so much from european. no... not necessarily. study the history of different types of music from around the world and you'll learn why.

I don't ask about neurophysiological mechanisms of sound perception. The question is : if mechanism for understanding any work of art is association, then what music associates with ? And if no, then what is this mechanism ?

I'll agree, that question is very interesting. I don't have an answer, unfortunately, and I can see no logical reason as to why certain sequences of notes and combinations of notes provoke certain reactions. Help ??

It's nice to see this type of discourse on this board.
In my opinion both beats and melodies can have an emotional impact in music, partly because of the individual's association with previous experiences relating to similar patterns or sounds, rhythmic and melodic parts and nuances in them. Obviously this can be very complex with associations made from minuscule sounds etc. It's a nostalgic way of listening to 'contemporary' music.
On the other hand, some sounds work exactly against this, and because of that obviously have different, maybe a more imaginative effect in the listener, raising an interest in a different type of audience.
The combination of both works pretty well, and IMO much of the music discussed on messageboards like this is focussed on variations based around that idea.

I must agree that emotions arise "partly because of the individual's association with previous experiences relating to similar patterns or sounds", but why these previous expreiences had an emotional effect ? One is able to understand music even if he have no previous musical experience (this doesn't applies to some ae tracks).
