[mp3] Wisp - In a Blue Face

Earstroke is proud to present:

Wisp - In a Blue Face

Wisp hands down In a Blue Face, which was made some time ago
under the name Lobe. this album creates a lovely sense of
nostalgia with playful drumlines, heartfelt melodies, and an
occassional outburst of some seriously satisfying beat
programming. it's a beautiful picture in the sky.

if you care to join our mailing list, you can do so
here

in other news, we will be opening up Earstroke Records with
a completely new site redesign, a forum, and a store with
t-shirts and cd's sometime near the end of spring/early
summer.

thank you, my favorite xltronians. have a lovely day!

glad you like it, r40f

dog_belch, have you even listened to it? its quite different
from his other stuff, and extremely emotional. its
technically his first release and i think it captures
something that his other work doesm't. its worth spending
the few minutes to download.

as a child.

dog_belch is bitter cuz he remembers when music was good,
but wants to forget...

The typography on that e-sleeve is so horrible i don't think
i could even begin to enjoy the music. Even if i liked wisp.

yo, i would love some honest input from xlt. we fired the
old guy who made covers, and hired somebody else.

here's the new guys work, which one do you like better?

i've enjoyed that particular graphic artist's work for a
long time. i think the cover looks great. you should tell
him i said so.

ps - i like the album. it's nice.

"wisp hands down in a blue face"

read really akwardly. i trip all over that . . . is that
the full album title, is it missing a phrase like 'wisp
hands down is awesome with "in a blue face,"' or are you
saying that he's handing it down from somewhere. maybe
hands over in that case. arghghgh.

i like the original cover better than the new one i think.
the only thing i don't like about the original is the way
the words "in a blue face" sit. not sure why though.

i like the album. i'm actually pretty surprised at how
negative some of the reactions are. it is very nice.

the only thing wring with the first album cover is the
typography. for the rest it's pretty nice. the second one is
better in typography but he should've kept the picture
intact. altough the picture thing is my opinion.

both covers dont give a very good impression imo. i'll do
you one for free - gimme a brief (ie. what you want it to
say or evoke) and feel free to take a look at my gallery
here and let me know if you want anything from
their in it - or commision me to do a similar idea if you
like anything.

I have the same thing.

he means the album is handed down by wisp, but first you
read it as if he's going to make some outrageously positive
statement about wisp - "wisp: hands down, the most
incredible talent!!!!", which would also be awkwardly
phrased on it's own.

offline Taxidermist from Black Grass on 2005-04-22 05:23 [#01573050]

I am downloading...

I quite like wisp, but the art you are using is pretty
noncomplimentary. And the text going along the contours of
the building looks tacky.

I say use the other one (its more distinctive), but maybe
try to get something that is not so... derivative?

So far I really like track 2 and 4.

Isn't tibbar that guy who hates xltronic?

Thanks plantre I really love these tracks. Library Grey
finishes horribly bluntly though... I can't fault it
anywhere else, I'm heart Wisp's stuff. Aside from one track
off that christmas EP and one of the SAW remixes these are
his bestest stuffs that I've heard.

i don't think that tibbar hated xltronic, he hated the
atmosphere of disrespect and insult that prevailed on the
board from time to time...

I have listened to it. I don't know how people have the gall
to be so derivative and yet make out there doing something
original. We've heard Squarepusher, and we heard Aphex
before that and we heard Ae doing the glitchy beat trick.
Doing nothing to the original formula apart from
watering it down slightly isn't really my cup of tea. I
appreciate there's technical ability but it sounds like
someone vomited the Warp catalogue. And then the "lush
melodies" sound as engaging as muzak. The equation is: do an
unattractive bit of beat fuckery then follow up with any old
lame "melody" which will sound in comparison like a heavenly
chorus of angels, repeat 10 times.

that's a good point, but with all due respect, good sir, my
rebuttal: almost all of our modern western music is
derivative of something. it's very hard to say much of
anything is original. furthermore, why can't someone create
a piece that's in homage or even in the style of
something that already exists? what's the problem? not
every music you hear is going to be a monumental step
forward in shifting the cultural paradigm - most of it is
going to be retreading the same paths. it's the same in any
style of music. some people say the beatles were
revolutionary, but they sure as shit didn't invent rock and
roll. and i'm not comparing wisp to the beatles, it's
obviously just an example.

I know what you mean, old boy, and you're quite right.
Although in this example I feel the homage is too
close to the source and adds little or nothing. I know IDM
is now a style (or several styles, if you break it down into
micro genres) to be picked up and appropriated as is Grunge,
Punk, Metal,Indie and unto Classical, probably. But now
Music seems to mimic ever decreasing circles (not the
sitcom, sadly) where it repeats the nearest last thing... I
just resent the cultural malaise, I like Aphex and I hear in
his music something I'd like to have done myself, but it's
not the form or the style, it's, I don't know, what he's
getting across. But just picking up the "skittersish beats"
and "warm melody" aspects... you could mix and match those
elements to make a billion albums... I'm not moaning (....),
I'm just saying... Fair play, have a net label release...
nice facsimile of better music, hope you get a track used on
advert or something.

to be honest, wisp's humpelndenBEATS kicks the ass out of
ANYTHING that has been shat out of xlt member's arses onto
this board. even the select few incredibly complex drill
tracks that people make - they're usually just a series of
tricks borrowed from previous drill records.

wisp's stuff is something different. he has the jazz idea
down whereby things jar to build up suspense and release
every now and again. nobody else around here seems to be
doing it, with perhaps the exception of lucidikah & awt, and
it makes for very boring and, dare-i-say-it unworthwhile,
music.

all interesting points. but to me its undeniably good music,
and if you don't like it, don't listen to it.

it should be noted for those who don't know, this was
technically Wisps first release, and i'd say he did a
damn fine job.

thanks to all who've listened so far, its all we ask!
