it thinks you have got another cat, and therefore for the rest of its life, will hate you for not loving it, and only ever pretend you like you when it wants something

my cat seems to be in denial when it sees itself in the mirror. it simply won't look at the mirror. if he does it's like he looks through it. werd

Yes, that about sums it up. Good description.
Maybe it recognizes it as another cat and it's not giving the right social clues to be looked at directly.

Oh hey, I recorded my cat purring this morning - in the morning when you rub and scratch him in a sunbeam he purrs a mighty purr - he sounds like a cross betwen a cat and a pigeon cooing and a wheel squeaking. I played it back for him really loud and it made him purr even louder.

You should keep recording him getting louder and louder and playing it back to him. It will be a kind of feline feedback loop.
I hope he does not explode.

I always wondered that. My cat jumps up onto my dresser, but never looks into the mirror. And if you were to hold her up to it, in front of it, she'll just look up or look down. Sometimes she looks at her reflection when she's standing in front of the dishwasher, and she'll kind of tap it with her paw. I wish I knew what she was thinking. I know what I'M thinking. strangely, i also knew a cat, zoe, who didn't care about mirrors but would stare at her reflection in a dishwasher door, occasionally pawing at it.
i showed a cat named lily a large mirror sitting on the floor, and she ran around behind it to see the cat behind the mirror, very surprised to see that there was no cat there...
my cats have no interest in reflections, but they do get interested at nature shows on tv.
some lower primates will pick fights with their mirror image, and will become obsessed with the "other" primate that seems to constantly challenge them. it's a sad and disturbing sight...
i've also read numerous accounts of individuals who took a powerful hallucinogenic extract of jimson weed and met strange people in their bathrooms, engaging them in conversation or becoming enraged at their insistence on mocking them by imitating their every move, only to realize hours later that they had been interacting with a mirror...

my cat will run at her reflection in the window at night, then bolt away again with her back arched. it think she understands mirrors though. there used to be a lot of them at floor-level when she grew up
yesterday though i fed her a soy crisp on the couch. when she knocked it between the cushions her reaction was to run behind the couch and look for it there :)

they probably think nothing.
my cat is so stupid, for the last 4 years i've had him, everytime i open the back door to let him in he ALWAYS waits at the wrong side, and gets hit in the face when i open the door. he still doesnt fucking get it, that if he moved to the other side he wouldnt get hit. i've got another cat, and he's smart enough to know where to wait out of the way.
cats are generally thick.

I think cats and dogs don't look INTO mirrors, just as they don't look at pictures or images on the television. They just see the physical object, apparently. Mirror = huge flat thing. Television = box. Painting = flat thing.

nope, cats can and do watch television. most shows etc do not interest them, but even without the sound they will get interested in shows with footage of animals in action...
there are also dvd's made explicitly for cats, with hamsters and butterflies and so on, some cats love it...

i think that larry doesn't know much about what he's talking about...
however, there's no question that cats experience visual stimuli very differently than humans, they are much more attuned to movement and less focused on details. however, there is no question that cats can see and do take an interest in images on a television. in my own repeated experience, cats do not care about people, cars, landscapes, interiors, etc. but put a hunting lion up, or birds, or something similar, and you can observe them taking an interest. if all they saw was a flickering smear of light they wouldn't bother with it at all...
