if you've only heard trout mask replica, i suggest you get safe as milk and unconditionally guarenteed, the 2 albums which precede it. theyre a great listen and even if you end up not liking the styles, you can see how the sound gradually changed leading up to TMR.

because his uncle used to come round and get drunk at parties and ask everyone if they'd ever seen a beef heart. when they replied no he would whip out his cock and squeeze it till it went purple.... and so captain beefheart was born

Safe as Milk and SpotlightKid/Clear Spot are great records. They are musically a little less radical than Trout Mask Replica, and have a blues/soul kinda feel to them. Bat Chain Puller and Doc at the Radarstation are great records too, they are a little harsher soundwise.
Haven't heard much Zappa, i wasn't really impressed with the songs i did hear.

For me, Freak Out!, Absolutely Free, and We Only Did it for the Money are the cream of the crop. I like that kind of demento pop. 200 Motels is pretty cool too.

my favourite track of Beefheart is Low Yo Yo Stuff I think the drummer is incredible also in safe as milk, on the end the beat is fucked up a la autechre, that's good
and the bassist who unscrews his strings had a good idea, that sounds fat
