lucid dreaming

Lucid dreaming means dreaming while knowing that you are
dreaming. The term was coined by Frederik van Eeden who
used the word "lucid" in the sense of mental clarity.
Lucidity usually begins in the midst of a dream when the
dreamer realizes that the experience is not occurring in
physical reality, but is a dream. Often this realization is
triggered by the dreamer noticing some impossible or
unlikely occurrence in the dream, such as flying or meeting
the deceased. Sometimes people become lucid without noticing
any particular clue in the dream; they just suddenly realize
they are in a dream. A minority of lucid dreams (according
to the research of LaBerge and colleagues, about 10 percent)
are the result of returning to REM (dreaming) sleep directly
from an awakening with unbroken reflective consciousness.

The basic definition of lucid dreaming requires nothing more
than becoming aware that you are dreaming. However, the
quality of lucidity can vary greatly. When lucidity is at a
high level, you are aware that everything experienced in the
dream is occurring in your mind, that there is no real
danger, and that you are asleep in bed and will awaken
shortly. With low-level lucidity you may be aware to a
certain extent that you are dreaming, perhaps enough to fly
or alter what you are doing, but not enough to realize that
the people are dream representations, or that you can suffer
no physical damage, or that you are actually in bed.

so,does anyone have this abillity?

-there was this animated movie which was made by studies
from the US universities, which has one awesome scene where
this guy finally starts to control his dreams! (waking
life)

i never managed to control my dreams, but i do know to dream
of flying a lot, where i can control the height and stuff
like that.
basicly the part where i wake up is when i can't fly and i
drop on the floor.

have you had any lucid dream?

my friend tells me that he can do that anytime he
wants,which is kinda odd.
it would be nice to have a separate life while
dreaming, build things you want..just make things perfect
(kind of).

i started lucid dreaming very young because my parents were
tired of me having nightmares and told me to dream up a
shotgun for the monsters. I ended up dreaming up much larger
guns that did the trick and the nightmares stopped.
Unfortunately my memory of my good dreams stopped with it.

to write anything you know after you wake up.

yeah i've found the best way to become aware you're dreaming
is listen to music, and have a light kip rather than a real
sleep, if the music is still playing when you wake up it
helps. its only happened to me like twice or something. but
has still been cool

i remember this tottaly psychedelic and spooky dream i had
while listening to this record
alphan centauri

it's recorded in 1971 and i think it was the peak of tan
dream in experimenting.
so the record was playing and i fell into that half awake
state in which i've seen some rather weird images.
somehow i managed to come back to awareness, which seemed
quite unreal,because i didn't know where i was for like 30
seconds,tottaly scared.

not lucid where i know im dreaming and am totally aware of
my dream state but more lucid in being awake and doing what
you want regardless of the fact that your dreaming. i
usually spend this time escaping from prisons by flying out

I've had a few dreams where I wake up and I'm still dreaming
in the past year. This is where you switch over when you
realise you are dreaming, but don't wake up.

Awareness I can understand (especially in a hypnagogic
state, like sleep paralysis), but I'm skeptical that anyone
can actually control their dreams. How do you know that the
feeling of control isn't just part of the dream?

well, the control is a part of the dream...that's why it is
so much fun when you found yourself aware.

kinda paradoxal, but you have to be aware of yourself
dreaming!

no no

fuck lucid dreaming

Fuck it ..

i've spent too many mornings, sleeping in ... practicing ,
doing this doing that.

it's FUCKED.

because now i get nightmares

ive never had nightmares before the whole "lucid dreaming"
thing i started tryign about 3-4years ago.

now i get them,
and i've had lucid nightmares,

knowing im dreaming ... but it turns bad, really bad.

knowing im dreaming and i can't wake myself up

some of my most longest "feeling" , if there is such a thing
... the dreams that felt like they were the longest, have
all been nightmares ive been unable to wake up from.

scared the shit out of me one too many times.

fuk it, it's cool but be careful opening the box ... you
might get something you don't want.

ive fuked myself up somehow now,
when i sleep on my right side (lying in bed) and fall
asleep, im GARUANTEED to have bad dreams.

usually ones that i wake up from like 3am not feeling well,

if i sleep on my left side, i have pleasant dreams .

this may sound wack, but it started about 6months ago.

really weird, and maybe since i think about it too much it
aactualy happens htis way
but when i sleep on my right side i get nasty dreams that
usually scare the shit out of me.

whatever, go figure

there is truth in the fact that sleeping on a certain side
does make a difference. when you wake up from a dream, it is
unlikely that the dream will be continued if you turn over
and fall asleep again.

so i've heard at least.

i would want to lucid dream but never get around to practice
it.

this is a cool movie: waking life

vitamin supplements with meals and a good minty
toothbrushing helps dreams greatly.

What I mean is that you may not actually be in control. It
is possible that you are just dreaming regularly, but a
facet of the dream is that you feel like you're controlling
it - I see no way of distinguishing such a feeling of false
control from a case of genuine control. Awareness is a
different story, but awareness doesn't imply control.

It's like when you're dreaming and you say "It's raining";
your statement isn't true even if it is raining outside.

a guest,

have you had a lucid dream before; accomplished one?

i see where you are coming from ... but with that attitude
it seems as if maybe you haven't really had a crazy lucid
dream yet?

just curious?

If by lucid dream you mean simply knowing that I am dreaming
then yes, I have been aware of being in a dream (mainly in
those semi-conscious states right before or after sleep). If
you mean being in conscious control of a dream then no, I've
never felt in control of a dream and I've never had reason
to believe that I have genuinely controlled a dream.

You do have a point; I don't mean to intrude on your
experiences so just ignore me if there is something more to
this that I can't appreciate. It just seems to me that
dreams in general represent such a fuzzy area that I
couldn't confidently believe that I was in control of them
(think of the way you 'just know' things when you dream, or
the way transitions work in dreams, etc.; there is a total
divide between dreams and wakefulness).

ACTION

You, another dream character, or a dream thing (including
inanimate objects and animals) do something unusual or
impossible in waking life. The action must occur in the
dream environment, that is, not be a thought or feeling in
the dreamer’s mind. Malfunctioning devices are examples of
object action dreamsigns

Unusual clothing and hair count as anomalies of form. Also,

CONTEXT

The place or situation in the dream is strange. You niay be
somewhere that you are unlikely to be in waking life, or
involved in a strange social situation. Also, you or another
dream character could be playing an unaccustomed role.
Objects or characters may be out of place, or the dream
could occur in the past or future.
