Well let me be the first to say that i thought last nights
gig in Glasgow was very poor. By all accounts i was
expecting a brain melting set with 'warped beats' and
'cosmic melodies'. Instead we were treated to 75 minutes of
insipid beats interspersed with some very ordinary melodies.
All four of us who went firmly agreed that it was
'pedestrian' at best.

To be honest, i didn't know what to expect, but i wasn't
expecting what i got. I was hoping for some disjointed
jarring and ultimately confrontational music, that although
difficult to absorb and even more difficult to dance to,
would yield results to those capable of finding its groove.
The 'groove' for want of a better word, was laid out, easily
identifiable and going nowhere fast. Tamely constructed
with no hints of informality or stabbing intensity.

PLOD PLOD PLOD it went, very repetitive, which got boring
very quickly. I can appreciate slow burning sets as long as
we are headed in the right direction, fuck, any direction.
Last night Autechre seemed determined to jog listlessly, on
the spot.

Occasionally the beats would pick up and start firing with
SOME life and purpose, only to be quickly swallowed up again
by the tedium.

All in all v.disappointing, and i deffo wouldn't go and see
them again. The praise i have read about the London gig
seems very flattering, although maybe that sort of drivel
works for the London crowds, up in Glasgow, we need
something with a bit more meat on its bones.

Thanks, but no thanks.

A weedgie friend loved it, so don't make it a town thing.
As for the "prick bone", i know.

Nice to hear people with different opinions....just that
your review told us nothing appart from the fact you didn't
like it.

Wich is fine though as we all know you a little.

"A fat dick?"

Nah, ye see mate, a dick doesn't have a bone inside it, its
mostly cartilidge and blood vessels. and its the blood
filling these vessels that make it hard, and anatomically
ready to deposit semen deep in a ladies vagina, ensuring the
sperm doesn't have too far travel in order to fertilize the
egg.

hobbes-yeah dont get me wrong there were folk there enjoying
the show, of course, but i've seen the Art School whipped
into much sweatier frenzy's, by all accounts the crowd were
quite static. Whats good for one, might not be as good for
another. I think what i was trying to say whas that i was
disppointed that Autechre didn't set the evening alight for
me, as i hoped they would have, should have and most
certainly could have.

The set they played was a million miles away from ANY stuff
i have heard of theirs previously, maybe this is them
tailoring their music for the masses, hell bent on public
adoration and desperate for acceptance on the live stage.
If this is the case and they are undermining thier core
values to achieve this, then thats something more serious
altogether.

Unless it took you 10 minutes to write that, i stated above
that i know the ol' penis doesn't have a "bone".

See i knew you would jump to the occasion so i quickly
posted again.

And yeah i respect your views man, it's just all i seem to
understand from your review is that the beats weren't like
you would have wanted. Not hard and weird enough, right?

Well thats my point, they seemed to be trying something that
was a deviation from the usual Autechre manifesto, and
people seemed to be a bit surprised by the unchallenging
and frankly weak set that they chose to play.

The words 'weak' and 'Autechre', have never previously
featured in the same sentence before as far as ii'm aware.

review/critique going on in his original post... the point
being, (i think :) that there seemed to be no "life:" in the
set. and that those emotions were driven be the two boys

Making music isn't about skill.

Nor is it about progress through a climbing-frame.

Making music is simply having the ability to create audio
with a notebook; to create sounds within sounds, like
pictures within films and so on.

Anyway, I don't know why they would go backwards like that.

Us London folk aren't more "easily pleased", the beats when
I saw them the other night were fucking stunning, and I am a
pretentious demanding cock when it comes to music.

I wasn't actually on any drugs or anything, but the music
was so stunning and complex and phat that I was whisked away
into another world without the need for any substances. They
were on top form.

hmm, i've got to say, eager makes a couple of decent points
there. the crowd did feel quite static at times, i'm sure
the fact they played in darkness with absolutely no lights
maybe accelerated that feeling.

i've seen the art school busier, it wasnt a sell out for
sure, but there's only meant to be 500 upstairs and there
was a bit more than that all upstairs at the same time.

and the tunes, well, they were unrecognisable and a bit too
sparse and noodly for the crowd, as Rob Hall had actually
played some brilliant electro tracks before they came on,
making them seem a bit dull by comparison.

Mark broom was the highlight of the night i'd say. Instead
of playing boring techno as i'd thought he might, we were
treated to "tour de france" and "energy flash" and lots of
other great tracks just flowing in and out with one
another.

i'm kinda glad i never paid £15 for the pleasure. i managed
to sneak in for nowt.

manchester set they done a few years back, i did hear a few
tracks from untitled in their,

that was my first visit to the art school, i thought the
place was an absolute dive, too dark upstair couldnt see any
of the DJ's blah blah blah

Overall it was awrite, roll on Glade

hey man, i fucking work there!!!!!

the darkness (not the band :P) was specifically requested by
autechre. usually they have shit hot lasers and stuff.

i'm surprised you've not been before, tons of quality folks
have played there, like almost everyone on warp, spezial
material and loads of other great people.....in the past 6
months they've had rjd2, dj premier, vsnares and planet mu
mob, ed dmx, jimmy edgar, people on spezial material records
and loads more.

fairplay, it is a dive, but a friendly one...with good
music. and the soundsystem is great.

I thought it was a good set. The beats were fookin well
pounding! I wish i took a minidisc and recorded the set. I
was bouncing aboot like a space hopper! The Mark Broom set
was nice, especially when he flung in some Kraftwerk and
Aphex. The Jack n Jills were well kickin in by then.

Rudi: Sorry about the blinds, I vaguely remember spilling
some tea on em but I was completely spongled. Yesterday was
one of the weirdest days of my life. I didnae feel like I
was in my own heid! Tell Nadia I'm sorry and i'll clean em
up. It was yer man Mark that spilt the beer on the bed
though. And Space Cadet Sportscene Scott got the bomber on
yer carpet. It was a fuckin brilliant night though, cheers.

weaklingchild- whats the 'smoking' policy all about in the
art school, the last few times ive been they have been
pretty heavy, security in general actually. i was smoking
some really nice skunk, just a wee single skinner, and the
ratty looking bouncer that was on the door suddenly appeared
right beside me and commented on the 'quality bush' that was
getting smoked 'aboot here'...Security mobilised.

..then at the Snares gig, which was pathetically empty for
such a show incidentally, there seemed to be a security
guard for like every 3 punters. Then when some barechested
idiot gets up on stage and goes over to Snares, they ain't
anywhere to be seen. Idiots.

Fuck, i nearly got chucked out of the Jah Shaka gig for
puffing. Now that would have been a bit ironic i suppose, i
was SO glad when he said he wasn't gonna chuck me out. made
the rest of the night seem even better. When i first
started going there in the late 90's, it was a safehouse,
very laid back!!
