Ubuntu question

I have a 160 gig drive with a 10 gig XP install - the rest
of it is logical drives in an extended partition.

I want to install Ubuntu but past experience tells me that
Linux doesn't want to boot from a logical drive in an
extended partition.

So I have a spare 120 gig drive I can set up as slave -
would it be possible to put the boot loader on the 160 gig
master and isntall Ubuntu on the 120 gig slave?

Excuse the techiness - I know there are friendly Linux
people hereabouts.

Trial and error, eh? That's just crazy enough to work.
Thanks!

That wasn't too painful - fastest most auto-configuring
Linux install ever. So yeah apparently you can install on a
slave as long as you let it write the bootloader to the
master drive's mbr. Good old trial and error, what what?

I just had to install XMMS and configure it to use ESD and
now I'm listening to some choons.

This is the first Linux install that recognized my M-audio
24/96 right away.

:: nerd bliss ::

yeah, so far as i can see ubuntu is pretty awesome.

Rythmbox + gstreamer0.8-mad (for mp3 support) seems to be
pretty good too. I've never really gotten XMMS's volume
controls to work consistently, although, i think they did
work pretty well in SuSE.

Synaptic is pretty much the shit too.

I have problems accepting an operating system as a better
alternative to another, if I am forced to think about it.

the crazy volume controls going crazy all the time is a
nightmare for sound recording. maybe i should try this
rhythm box thing...

There's a quote on the XMMS site to the effect of how much
they hate ESD. I haven't had trouble but generally I leave
XMMS all the way up and control the volume from the system
volume - that way I don't get deafened if some other program
decides to beep at me or set off a siren.

Synaptic is awesome indeed - all this is based on Debian
apt-get, right? I've been able to locate and install
everything I like from packages instead of pissing about
compiling from tarballs.

Not sure how they're able to put together such an awesome
distro for free - I'm going to donate them some moneys.

McBob - yeah everyone loves Father Jack - I wish the CBC
would recycle the episodes again. I miss 'em.

yeah, synaptic is great except it gives me errors it
shouldn't. i have to figure out what i screwed up in the
filey thing. i know it's probably my fault, though. but
the program is great otherwise.

Different OSes have different strengths - Windows's strength
is that it's polished and easy to use, and everything mostly
works out of the box. And there's tons of commercial grade
software for it.

Linux's strength is that it's stable and secure, it's free,
there's tons of great free software available including
development tools, so people with the talent and inclination
can become co-creators of the platform. And if Ubuntu is any
indication it's starting to give Windows a run for its money
in the polished and easy to use department too.

I think people who are snobby and insecure about how they
run difficult leet software give Linux a bad name. But it's
really good once you get up the learning curve and know a
few tricks. It ain't rocket science.

There's a single-slider volume control on the top toolbar
panel that is borken. I don't know what that's about. I use
the applications -> sound and video -> volume control and it
works fine. Depending on the complexity of your sound card
it can take some headscratching to figure out what control
does what. They oughtta work on that.

error parsing string "filey thing"

Yeah, it's all debian based, just more up to date and
prettied up for teh noobs.

I'm dropping a donation as well.

This is also the first time I've really spent significant
time in gnome, and I'm liking it. Quite a bit less
cluttered than KDE.

error parsing string? don't know it.

i thought the volume slider on the bar is the same program
as Volume Control? they both open the same dialog. the
sound is totally fucked up for me. it randomly (read: for
reasons i don't understand) attenuates the sound and gets
extremely quiet, then the input levels get extremely loud,
then the main gets really really loud... i guess depending
on what programs i try to use. i just think it's really
counter-intuitive. when i had windows, the software had my
soundcard configured almost perfectly out of the box - i
never had to set a level on the software. it was beautiful.

Yes! It's also the first time Gnome hasn't been a sluggish
resource hog. They really worked on Nautilus - it used to be
painfully slow reading big directories.

I used to like KDE for the more responsive desktop but I
always ended up using GTK based apps - I guess because the
QT widget libraries are not fully free, the better
programmers tend to work with GTK.

Anyhoo nice to have the desktop and apps all under one roof,
so to speak.

I haven't felt the urge yet to use IceWM or Windowmaker,
which is surprising.

I mean I don't know what filey thing you're talking about.
Did you randomly traipse through system directories
modifying and deleting files? La la la la, I liek to change
things, la la la la... :D

About your volume control - go system -> preferences ->
multimedia systems selector - are you using ESD for the
default sink? ("Sink" is their odd term for where the sound
gets output, I think)

Then go applications -> sound and video -> volume control ->
file -> change device and select the name of your sound card
instead of the chipset name. That's what I had to do to get
the controls for my Audiophile to show. In the volume
control you may also ahve to go edit -> preferences to
select what controls you want displayed.

woah! you are awesome. thanks a lot for your help.

as for the error filey thing, i was poking around in root
and i saw this thing labelled "err_maximizer.s0 - never
delete" and obviously i knew it had to be a nerd trick so i
deleted it.

but seriously, it has to do with the sources.list for extra
repositories. i just have to fool around with it some more
so that it doesn't give me errors when i try to install
certain programs. i'll figure out and ill find my frog.

Rythmbox is the default "Music Player" in ubuntu, I think.
(screenshot)

It seems to be a pretty good player, although I haven't
messed with it a whole lot.

It doesn't support mp3 by default though (cause it's a
closed format), so you gotta use synaptic to install
gstreamer0.8-mad.

wierd.. when you right-click on an mp3 and choose to 'open
with', it should be listed as "Music Player", I think.

Although, I'm not at home so I can't look at my machine.

The guy that helped me get my wireless card working had me
set up synaptic to search the entire universe.. which may've allowed me
to install things that are masked by default.

Other than that, I'm running a pretty much basic install of
hoary.

This makes me think of a story in a 4th grade reader about a
little boy named Ubuntu who gets lost in the wilderness and
uses his survival skills to get to safety.

The teacher assigns questions:

1) What does Ubuntu do when he sees the lion's tracks?
Why?

3) How does Ubuntu find water in the wilderness?

2) What applications does Ubuntu try to open an mp3
with?
