while leaving the microphone sitting out in the open.

Perfect for people who want to sample a nearby conversation
without being caught.

Sneaky!!

1) once a roommate did this. when i lived in a university
hostel. He went out, leaving the three of us in the room.
But we've noticed the mic suspiciously lying on his table,
turned on his comp and discovered cooledit recording a wav.
We started to yell into the mic causing overdrive.

2) not so long ago i recorded how a young punk sang a song
at a birthday party at our room. He took an acoustic guitar
and started to draw girls' attention by singing stupidly.
The mp3 of this extremely disgusting air disturbance is
stored for further utilisation.

yeah, could have something to do with the fact that most
people know which drugs are illegal though.

try to enter a drug-thread where people are talking about
taking cocaine and say "did you know, possession and use of
cocaine is actually illegal".

no shit, Sherlock.

would you like to be my new assistant?

anyway, I said that because the first thing I thought when I
read the topic title is that it is illegal to record other
peoples voices without consent and that not many people know
that!

I left a small tape recorder (the ones that take those
mini-tapes) set to trigger recording with any sound, inside
a pillow case. We all went out got drunk and I forgot about
it. 4/5 hours later we came in and the following moring I
found about 2 hours conversation of us speaking nonsense :)

Redrum: Depends on the location/context. Field recordings in
public where you're not "targeting" anyone in particular,
merely recording background noise, for example, are fine.
Privacy laws in the UK are almost non-existant (apart from
places like at work, etc.); There was a famous case where a
landlord rigged up security cameras behind the bathroom
mirror in a student house, filming the female occupants and
it was found to be lawful!

Yeah I remember seeing a program about an engineer guy who
secretly installed a camera into a couple's tv somehow to
get off on their bedroom antics. And there was nothing the
couple could do apart from go on tv and rant about it, there
was no law against it.
