IT WORKS MOTHERBITCHES!!

Ok, after fucking months of fucking around trying to get
various wireless network cards to work with various flavors
of linux, I decided to give Ubuntu a shot... the final shot.
If this didn't work I was going back to windows.

It didn't work out of the box like they said it would. My
specific card was listed in their supported hardware list
and all of that.

So, I decided to log into their IRC support channel, and see
if help was immediate. IT WAS! Seriously, a guy told me to
PM him, then he proceeded to walk me step by step through
the diagnosis and fixing process.. which took almost three
hours. I can't believe someone from the linux community
wasn't condescending or a complete dick. Dude went WAY out
of his way to help me.

Anyhow, the installation process was seriously easy, and it
seems to run nicely enough. At least as good as gentoo, if
not slightly better.

For real, big thanks to everyone who suggested giving ubuntu
a try. I'm so happy I could do backflips right now.

wow, fantastic! glad to hear it worked out for you.

after my computer got screwed up again this afternoon, i
decided to give ubuntu a shot. i just got it installed. it
takes up a lot more disk space and it runs slower, but
otherwise it seems all right so far.

what are your system specs? this computer is pretty old,
and it's running nicely on here:

- P3 733Mhz
- 640MB ram

After literally years of trying to force a Betamax tape into
my Philips Video 2000 now finally JorgeSoft of Bremen have
created a plastic "patch" which enables me to enjoy all the
"much better" qualities of Betamax over the godless, not
worth shit on a goose's arse, VHS, all playable on the
convenience of my obsolete machine. The programmes I record
are much better than the originals and everyone thinks I'm
great.

it's 733 but it has only 192MB ram.

not much seems to be customizable and it doesn't seem to
have cd-burning software? i just figured out how to set up
the cd software (ima noob, etc).

no point in saying "well done" either then, really.

I'll try it anyway:

well done!

yeah, ubuntu's really heading in the right direction; it's
certainly far from perfect, but it's shaping up quite well.

fuck ubuntu, debian offers the same support (irc channels).
ubuntu's the windows of linux. Hate them. If you got your
card working in ubuntu; cool. If you would have taken the
same troubleshooting path as you did with ubuntu (n00bing it
up in the irc channels), with ANY other distro, not only
would you not have had to load that crap on your box, you'd
be able to keep a much better distro on it.

thumbs down.

Epohs, if any Linux user ever condescends to you, let me
know AND I WILL KILL THEM WITH NINJA MENTAL POWERS.

I'm using Windows only because of Reaktor but I'm going to
install the hedgehog on a separate drive so we can be Linux
buddies. XXX OOO XXX MCXMVIIQQQ

omigod, no way. Ubuntu recognizes my Audiophile 24/96 card
and installs the correct ALSA drivers. I wrestled with that
for days in other distros. Fuck my shit. I am impressed.

er, how the fuck is ubuntu better than debian, or
vice-versa? both projects are very involved with each
other; they have virtually the same fucking package trees
for gods sake.

debian's mentalities are stagnant as shit though; it's great
if you're willing to run unstable and set everything up
manually, but you can achieve exactly the same thing with
ubuntu and it's loads easier.

sorry, ubuntu _is_ better in debian in terms of actual
release cycles, software support and ease of use. it's a
polished debian, if you will, but yes, you can achieve the
same with sid if you're willing to put the work in. the key
to adoption here, is that most people don't want to put the
work in, or plain don't know how to.

you're not a debian developer by any chance, are you? i
can't see why anybody from a user perspective would claim
debian to be "better", unless they're heavily involved.

yeah, this machine is primarily for me to play around with,
but i also would like for it to work.. meaning that when i
want to accomplish something, it helps to make forward
progress. that just wasn't happening with gentoo. i'm sure
this was due to my lack of linux knowledge... but that's the
problem, isn't it? should you have to be a linux developer
to be able to make it work?

for all i read about how amazing the gentoo forums are, i
was unable to get sufficient help. i wasn't rude, and i
tried to provide all the information that i could, but if
the know-how was there, they sure weren't forthcoming with
it.

i'm sure i could've made my wireless card work with gentoo
if i was familiar with everything that i needed to do, but i
wasn't. and nobody was helping.

i decided to give one more flavor a shot before i abandoned
linux, and ubuntu was the flavor people were raving about
the most, so i went with it. and, i immediately stumbled
across someone who was willing to spend the time with me
that i needed.

that's pretty much it. i may not have the most streamlined
installation possible, but it's now doing everything that i
wanted it to do, so i'm happy.

and, comparing ubuntu to windows isn't quite fair from my
admittedly naive point of view. i was under the assumption
that debian was dedicated to using the most open software
they can... which is pretty much the antithesis of
microsoft's philosophy.

i hate the entire mentality of gentoo. it's for people who
are bored and have nothing better to do; everything takes
fucking _ages_, from configuring various things, to
compiling every goddamn thing in the operating system.

offline xf from Australia on 2005-04-09 20:00 [#01558644]
Points: 2952 Status: Lurker

actually, i don't hate it; it makes sense in some
situations, for sure, but i personally do not seee the sense
in it for a desktop operating system.

claims that it runs faster are pure bullshit, too; perhaps a
percent or two with various optimisations that will probably
introduce additional stability, maybe. not worth it.

i've got to say, ubuntu is working out really well thus far.
once i figured it out a bit, it got easier. it isn't
crashing like the other gui i had. i like it all right.

i agree with xf,

im no where near a huge linux freak

but my friends who use it, im like ... why?

it's like "oh, i need to install a media player"

ok, well im gonna spend 8 hours compiling this media player
so 8hours from now i can finally listen and watch my
videos.

erm, ok?

for an extra 5% performance?

no thanks , if i want something i want it now

my friends with gentoo have it on relatively faster boxes,so
why do they go thru so much for a simple 5% (if) performance
boost?

BUT WAIT DOOD, they exclaim,,, ON THIS FASTER BOX IT
COMPILES FASTER SO ... SO THERE!!!!!!!!

ok
