than (gasp) 5 minutes ago.

to be honest that particular mix is a lesson that everyone
need to hear weather they appreciate it or not.

I wish people would draw their influences a bit wider and
listen to some of the old stuff instead of jumping in at the
late period Ae deep end, i'm not saying you have to be some
hoary old music buffer, but some of those classics need to
be heard, especially if you want to make electronic music
yourself.

I agree 100%. I think it's great that everyone has the
tools to make music. Drawing fron such a limited source as
'IDM' is ridiculous. I wish the music makers here would
expand on others efforts that are there to be heard.

Oh happy days swapping tapes at school of the Electro and
Streetsounds compilations, ...I am in danger of getting
maudlin. There's a fucking joy in music like "proper"
Electro that marries experimentalism with dance floor
friendliness a billion miles removed from a lot of po-faced
revisionism touted today, I'm not decrying all music made
today as bollocks, but it could fucking liven its act up and
be a bit braver.

dog_belch that couldn't have been said better. picking up
from recent releases leaves artists with skinny sounding
music

jivv>> i liked all of the songs on that mix. i think i died
sometime in this period and my soul recycled in 1984 cause
its just like the best music ever to me. hard to turn off

the article opening up british black life + music to me is
real good. what was it like for brothers in europe back
then? i have no knowledge about it

Not being a brother myself I couldn't possibly begin to
assume what the state of play was back then, but I think in
general the history of Electro, as you say really, does open
up a very interesting and, as the article says, often
overlooked area of music history, and black music history.
It's interesting the very fact that it is a bit overlooked,
is it that it doesn't fit in with any neat linear story of
music, is it a bit too cerebral, too disco/gay, too
uncomfortable for some people... I don't know. Fascinating
though, I find.

i think it's cause : (from the article) It wasn‚t one
narrow style that never strayed from within the confides of
an even narrower BPM range, Electro-Funk was anything
goes

so one would be correct to say it was uncomfortable.
unpredictable, "wild". maybe hard to sell also?

sean qunt>> "space cowboy" is awesome

part of a new order song or am i crazy?

Africa Bambaata or Planet Rock
Zapp and Roger
Grandmaster Flash
Herbie Handcock (the album specifically is called Future
Shock)

IMO old school electro is where the bridge between funk and
rap was made. The album Planet Rock by Africa Bambaata is
kind of the definitive electro release.
