who covers expenses for making videos?
i always thought labels give artists they want to promote
certain amount of money for that purpose...am i wrong?

do the artists have to return that money once video is
made??

or is it entirely up to an artist to decide and pay for
videos??

Some artists have to put the money in themselves, though
it's getting rare.
Depends, but yeah usually the label will take care of
putting money up front. Problem these days is that the big
companies have become market analysts and usualy tend to
create a product as opposed to trusting one.
In some cases the artist won't have much say on anything
regarding promotion and stuff. They put the money up for
you, you shut up. (they wish)

apparently, the traditional major label's scam is to charge
the band for everything at the end, including the music
video budget. but obviously, if the band actually has any
backbone or common sense, they will not agree to ridiculous
terms before signing a contract.

as far as I know artists still pay for promotion themselves,
just like they pay for recording etc. themselves too.

it's true the recordcompany will forward the money, but then
it will have to be paid back.

yeah, that is a better way of explaining it than the way i
put it.

Ah, it depends what you are talking about...and who...
anyway, i won't go into it because i don't want to.

But i was not making a bullshit post, just not very in depth
maybe.

"the recordcompany will forward the money, but then
it will have to be paid back.
"

Well not in all cases, at all. But yeah, record companies
aren't so courageous anymore, they wanna control it all. I
know a few stories of labels losing lots, and no paying back
sated in the contract. It can be a gamble.

it's partly what the infamous steve albini essay on the problem with music is about.

If we were in a cafe in some beautiful dutch village this
conversation would be easier for me.
I hate typing sometimes, and knowing posts can be read again
and again at all times.

we're basically talking about majors here, though.

although smaller labels will simply not have the money to
pay for a video, so you'll still be paying for it yourself -
but at least then it's all above board.

i don't feel sorry for major labels. they can afford to
take risks on artistic music, but they do not. not in the
past ten years, that i'm aware of.

labels have control over the mainstream markets and can sell
anything they like, but they are content with factory
bullshit. it isn't like the majority of people who buy the
avril lavigne cd's know any better - they are just told that
it is popular and go along with it. same thing with
commercial hip hop, commercial metal, etc. you can stick
anything short of merzbow onto mainstream radio and have it
go platinum, but the labels choose the acts that they can
control and that they feel safe molding an image around.

there are only 4 companies now. bar small indie babels,
these 4 won ALL record labels.

some indie labels actually do have the money to pay for
music videos (which, as the early 90's videos show us, are
often much better when cheap and lo-fi) but they can not
afford to put it on mtv and get behind it with a single
release and promotion the way a major can.

i can't get that..can't face it really..so far i was pretty
sure none of the artists that are more into music aspect of
the music bussiness would pay for their own promotion
(especially not videos)..i just can't imagine any idm (just
for example) folks to be doing that, as far as i know some
of them even dislike it..maybe i could comprehend that some
ppl on smaller labels would do vids by them selves but not
people on big labels since the label is usually the one to
make profit out of it..hmm, i guess i should make sure
before saying something like that but i was 100% certain
this was the case..oh well :)

there are "music videos" and there are "promotional clips" -
two ways of looking at the same thing. i think that music
videos are an overlooked artform... it is a medium with
unlimited potential to present incredible dual-media art,
but it is almost always treated like an advertisement. it's
a shame, really.

qrter is right? :)

r40f, yeah, i totally agree on that..still, i was pretty
sure labels pay for that..be it videos or promotional clips
:)
