Is anybody into this genre? It's got connotations with crappy new age music sometimes, but it's a far cry from relaxing nature music (even if artists involved in it are signed to labels that put out that stuff.)
I'm talking about artists like: Steve Roach, Robert Rich, Alio Die, B Lustmord, and Ian Boddy (as well as early Tangerine Dream albums like Ziet and Pheadra.)

My favorite Lustmord album is "Stalker", where he collaborated with Robert Rich. It's a very very dark, slow moving, tense piece. But it's never boring and there are moments of lightness and release....It's simply a brilliant atmospheric trip basically.

Wicked. Hope you enjoy it.
In the right conditions it can be a pretty scary experience. A bit like the Silent Hill games for some reason.

Well, you're right; a lot of his stuff is tribal ambient. But albums like "Darkest Before Dawn" and "The Magnificent Void" is not tribal. If you haven't checked those two out, you really should. :)

Roach, Robert Rich, Alio Die, B Lustmord...they are not DARK ambient. And generally, Germans are best in dark ambient.

Well, some of their releases are darker than others. "Fissures" is beautiful and very uplifiting in places, while Stalker is generally a lot more brooding and unsettling and mysterious.

wikipedia is not too competent in many domains, don;t you agree? They didn't even mention the essential dark ambient artists. LIsten to Thomas Koner, you will have a definition of dark ambient.

But I disagree: Yes, some albums by the artists I mentioned are not "dark" ambient, but many of them are. In fact, that's why I love those artists in particular, as their sound shifts from glorious uplifting moments to the depths of Hell.
Zeus, I like your music! :)

yeah, i second the Troum and Yen Pox suggestions... and of course Deathprod's latest album is essential if you're into this sort of thing... some others that might fall along the same lines (although people seem to have a pointlessly specific definition of dark ambient which might not include all of the following, despite the fact that they play ambient music that is dark):
Maeror Tri Stilluppsteypa Sigtryggur Berg Sigmarsson Brent Gutzeit TV Pow Zbiegniew Karkowski Mnortham Lasse Marhaug Minamo
a lot of these artists are not exclusively dark ambient, but i reckon they come close enough... at times, anyhow (lots of Marhaug is straight up noise, for example, but his collab with Kevin Drumm might be applicable here...)

stars of the lid (earlier stars of the lid)
mirror (www.brainwashed.com/mirror--excellent guitar drone duo, with releases on die stadt and their own three poplars)
mark spybey, especially his album with james plotkin-a peripheral blur
brent gutzeit and deathprod was mentioned, and i suggest those as well.
lustmords a bit too "hey look at me im dark ambient" for my tastes, though he's got some great stuff here and there.
