I just went to this release recently....

While there are a few stunning moments in lots of tracks
(and Steinbolt/Iambic Poetry 9/50 Cycles never fail to turn
me on) do any of you think the whole thing is a bit of a
mess in terms of production, mastering, and general layout?
I know it's meant to sound "live", and I can appreciate
that-but I just find a lot of the elements throughout really
annoying. Sometimes a track will be really enjoyable, and
then a big wanky bass guitar solo comes in at 10db higher
than anything else. Or something.

sorry for the irrelevant post.

no, i think its good. i also think you get off ripping
records apart with your over indulgent criticism which i
find rather tiresome. can't you just enjoy something for
what it is?

earthleakage, yes I can enjoy music and I do enjoy
Ultravisitor. But since this messageboard is supposed to be
about discussing music, I think it is fine to criticize and
discuss an album's merits, no?

And no, I couldn't do any better, and I still love
Squarepusher.

let's criticize earth's music

see how he feels.

::puts defensive hat on::

LOL

Things like this:

"tetra sync is perfect

except when he shitfuks it at the end with that uuber loud
and annoying bass note (like you're saying)"

Are you really interested or is it just a case of wanting to
catch someone out?

Anyway, I am not the only person who finds the mastering and
production annoying here; I have read it plenty of times on
here and WATMM. As for the layout-it simply drags on at
almost 80 minutes, and I find tracks like "An Arched
Pathway" or some of the bass guitar solo tracks boring
irrelevant (although one or two are quite beautiful.)

*boring and irrelevant

And please don't start getting insulting, it's only an album
and people can criticize it as much or as little as they
want.

It's funny the way you always seem to look for others to
defend your view point or seek the agreement of others for
having a particular viewpoint, just have your own viewpoints
and be proud of your viewpoints if you beleive in your
viewpoints.

earth is the best buncha junkies that ever strapped on
guitars and played one or two riffs in downtuned stupor for
twenty minutes at a time. and now they're heralded as
avant-garde masters. awesome.

CS2x, tetra sync has always been my fav.

from the moment i got that 20second clip like 3months before
the album was out

i looped it ... more than you can imagine.

tetra sync blows me away, it's the "mt saint michaels" track
of ultravisitor

it's just

the end

that bass is so loud and obnoxious ... it almost ruins it
for me - i always have to turn it down before the bass hits
... its so loud !

i like the long production work of it.

i can turn it on and let it play through and roam about the
house ... doing chores and the sort.

it's a pretty good background-listening album

you can just let it play and go about your business

I can understand how some parts can be considered overly
self-indulgant, but I enjoy the album anyway. My favorite
track on the album is 50 Cycles.

Yeah, I love his nonsense rap during that (or perhaps it
makes sense and I don't get it) along with the wicked dark
drones. Listening to that in the car at night is a
stunningly dark and powerful experience.

how it flashes in and out

hurts my ears :(

Yeah, during the breakdown in that I always have to turn it
down. That fucking screeching distortion.

But then the bass riff enters and his ramblings start and it
mutates into pure brilliance imo.

love it.

i think it has a slightly earthy feel, not really full on
electro rave up style of old. i just hope he moves forward
after this, but then again no need to hope, sire jenkinson
does so most often.

i like it a lot, i think he tried something new mixed with
something old, as in something new - classical music spliced
with jazz and cut together with fast beats

mixed with something old - squarepushers sound - its been
the same since feed me wierd things, but i didnt expect him
to change his sound

he is a great artist, up there with rdj and the like.

i think the bad production you describe is what i really
love about this album...

the headroom present in most track allowing sounds to burst
may be annoying at first, but it makes the album really
alive imo, sounding not so static...

it's like badly overproduced pop-music is quickly tiring for
the ear because volume doesn't vary much, it is fatiguing
because of the loudness and boring because of the lack of
movement.

you may not like it, but saying thing like it's badly
mastered (do you even really know what it means?) or badly
produced is a bit stupid.

I think its a great album, one of his best. Very conceptual
and different from everything else i've ever heard, even
though it draws from lots of influences. I enjoy the crappy
mastering, the whole album just has a nice feel to it.

Finally I'll say this: IT'S NOT A HEADPHONE ALBUM!
An IDM record thats not suitable on headphones? HOLY SHIT

Bring that shit outside and put it on some nice speakers.

Come to Daddy ain't much a headphone album imho. I mean I
was listening to it, and it struck me how mono-ish 90% of
the album is. Behind the layers and layers of fucked up
sounds for it's time, it's very simplified for it's
productions. Sounds are panned perhaps 25% each way of
center, and it's very natural and flowing the way the
elements are presented (percussions, ambiants, synths,
etc...)

Still, there are some magical moments in that production,
where for like, 5 seconds, sometimes even half a second
Richard will fuck up the whole thing and send the entire
track, or perhaps half of the elements into some weird
filter only a guy like him could program, and the entire
thing goes WHOA! into the stereo seperation for an
incredible effect.
