Hey, you dig Gang Gang Dance - what do you think about
these guys? I just picked up their new one "Burned Mind" and
I'm "listening" (i.e. being subjected) to it now. I fucking
dig it!

On the subject of Gang Gang Dance, I just saw that they have
a new album being released on April 25th entitled "God's
Money". When I was at the Animal Collective show in Brooklyn
last month an album or something was played over the sound
system. I hope to God it was the new GGD because it was
incredible.

wolf eyes is really cool... that's really good album and i
also recommend it. it's a really distinctive sounding noise
record.

I was initially attracted to it because they sounded
slightly more beat/rythmically oriented than most noise
acts. Case in point is the track "Ancient Delay". Being a
huge fan of really early eara SWANS, this got my attention.

yeah, that's what i like about it as well - the noisy
rhythms. it didn't make me think of the swans, though (i
love their early stuff as well). i should listen to it
again - i haven't in a while.

Like any Godflesh as well? Obvious SWANS influence. I have
been listening to Pure since I was 15, but I have yet to
pick up Street Cleaner.

nah... i admit i've heard very little godflesh and everyone
tells me it's great, but i just don't like what i've heard
at all. not my thing.

i could see the influence, but the swans created their own
world... nobody does it like they did. :) they've become
one of my favorite bands rather quickly.

I agree with that. I have only been into SWANS for
slightly over a year, but all the early stuff is in my top
all-time albums list (especially Public Castration is a Good
Idea).

Boom..............Ba Da............BOOM...............BA
DA
Money........................is
flesh......................

i've heard of that but i don't have it yet. is that a live
record?

i've got the FILTH / BODY TO BODY, JOB TO JOB cd... cop is
next on my list :) FILTH is a masterpiece for sure.
brilliant in concept and perfectly executed music - a fully
realised extreme music. they really never got their due for
that early stuff.

I can't believe you haven't heard that record!!! Public
Castration was my first experience with SWANS and it totally
floored me. This is SWANS at their slowest and most
threatening. Intense. Scary intense. Get that record
post-haste and tell me what you think!

Filth is very cool, almost danceable. However, Cop is
probably my favorite studio recording. Filth is my second
favorite tied with Greed/Holy Money.

i dig Wolf Eyes quite a bit, but i'm not such a fan of
Burned Mind... Stabbed in the Face is pretty awesome but the
rest of the album was... i dunno, maybe a bit to rocky? if
you like the beat-driven noise-thing, then maybe try to find
Slicer or Lost Sockets... both older Wolf Eyes releases that
have that sort of thing going on... but really there's
plenty of awesome Wolf Eyes, Dread and Dead Hills are two
other excellent WE releases, imo... heavy shit

but then again, i can think of a lot of noise acts that i
prefer over both Wolf Eyes and Merzbow...

I have 4 Merzbow albums and I really dig two of them. 1930
and Merzbird are really good if taken as auditory sculpture.
Especially 1930.

A lot more "noise" oriented than GGD, but I know you like
this type of stuff a little as well. You a SWANS fan
perchance?

How about you DeadEight, have you heard the good news?
SWANS have risen. Seriously, are you a SWANS fan?

thanks, i'll be getting those! and thanks for that other
thing - that things is totally amazing..im really thrilled
with that :)

empiricus, i already checked out wolf eyes collaboration
with smegma and it sounded awesome - not really noise but
real nice stuff (i've only listened to it once so i can't
comment on it quite yet, but it sounded real nice on first
listen).

as for swans, im no expert but i like some of their album a
lot!

i've always wanted to get into the Swans, but i'm a bit
intimidated by their catalogue... i've heard some of the
post-Swans stuff like Angels of the Light and Jarboe, but
that's about it...

what do you think is the best place to start?

Easy. Get "Public Castration is a Good Idea" (live - my
personal introduction to the masters) or the reissue on
Young God records, the CD which includes 3 albums
"Cop/Fool/Holy Money. If you dig those two pick up
Filth/Body to Body, Job to Job and/or Children of God (more
melodic and starting in the more goth/acoustic direction
that I'm not so enthralled with personally) You will either
hate them or be totally changed.

Now, mind you I like the heavy as a motherfucker, I'm
going to blow my brains out on network television in
prime-time type SWANS shit. If you're not suicidal, this
stuff, in proper doses, will make you question your
continued existence. That being said, anyone not already
seriously predisposed to voluntary self-extermination should
experience it at least once.

i saw Smegma last week. It was an incredible show: weird,
funny and hypnotic at the same time.

wolf eyes are great, especially dead hills, etc..
live they're awesome too, they're touring europe again in
june i think. check them out.
and gang gang dance are touring too, with Excepter (!!).

so many good shows in the near future..

the later-period swans is as intense as the early stuff, but
in an opposite way. i love their later works at least as
much as the early stuff. but at first listen, it really
sounds like two different bands. it's the two opposite
sides of the same coin.

so check out what empiricus says, but also listen to The
Great Annihilator cd.

Children of God is the turning point of the two periods and
it is a great album, but it is one of the most difficult to
get into, imo. it's really a challenging listen, whereas
their other albums were much more obvious.
