I actually didnt like lost highway much. Mulholland drive
was awesome though. Nothing will ever top Eraserhead though
:)

mulholland drive is actually like lost highway in many
respects, I found it much more entertaining though. Its
really fucked too, which is always nice in a movie :)

Explination; heres what happens, its really just the 1 guy..
well both of them, its not supposed to be a converntional
film. Its about these people that are intertwined somehow,
and its how they all meet on the "Lost Highway" so to speak.
Its not supposed to make perfect sense said Lynch.

Its like thoe space or horror movies with crazy monster and
such, it could never happen, but its good to watch .. if you
like that sort of thing.

This movie is one of those that would never happen ofcourse
its just.. one big mystery.

Think of it like this.. the one line by Bill Pullman that
makes you think it out to the final scene... to get it.. he
says he doent like video cameras because he likes to
remember things how they really happened..... get it...
think about it hard.

Ext. beach house
A rotund man, dressed in the fashion of a Chandler
detective, staggers out of the beach house as if he has been
shot. As he approaches the camera, it becomes apparent that
he is WALKING UPSIDE DOWN. He is followed by a SULTRY FEMME
FATALE who is CARRYING A SLINGSHOT.

Man: Oh God, no!

The man falls over. He is now THE RIGHT WAY UP.

Femme fatale: I knew you'd come round eventually.

Close-up on the femme fatale

Femme fatale: They always do...

Cut back to the man. He has turned into DAVID
HASSELHOFF.

Man: This DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE!
Femme fatale: It's not supposed to! (Starts SPEAKING
BACKWARDS)

V/O: PLAYSTATION 2! THE THIRD PLACE!

it's lovely in it's elusiveness...trying to give it meaning
almost spoils it..but i think it mostly has to do with
guilt...have you done something so bad that it makes you
wish you were dead? or another person in another
lifetime?..well that's the gist of it.....

my friends and i discussed the film and we really think that
it is a dream,

a dream where the guy gets into a shitload of trouble and
goes to sleep wishing he was someone else, he wakes up and
his wish came true.
its gotta be a dream

have you ever dreamed about something that you had talked to
someone about,

for instance,
maybe the character was talking to a friend about wishing
you were another person.

its just a theory though

Lost Highway is great, although not as good as Mullholland
Drive methinks...
Anyone seen Blue Velvet? I really wanna see this one dag
nabbit. Twin Peaks is also very good (only seen the movie,
not the series) and has a stellar soundtrack (like most of
Lynchs movies :P).

Richard Pryor is great in this movie, yes.

Blue Velvet is a classic, one of Lynch's top 2 movies I
think.

richard pryor is an absolute legend, I've grown up watching
many of his earlier films like "stircrazy" and gotta say
that he was very good at what he did, (and that's being a
funny mofo,) it was great to see him in LostHighway,
(something I never expected)

I watched this twice today (and several scenes multiple
times) - and

have come up with a few theories.

Now - in order to understand my theories you cannot try and
relate it

to the film in the order of events displayed - as I'm going
to try and

show what my understanding of the actual order of events
is.

There is only one man. Fred. He is in an unhappy marriage
and is with

a wife with a mysterious past. He begins to suspect she is
having an

affair, and follows her to the "Lost Highway Hotel" where he
rents the

room 26, across from room 25 where she enters. When she
leaves he goes

across the hall and kidnaps Dick Laurent and takes him to
the desert

and executes him.

A day (or two) later he goes to a party with his wife, and
talks to

one of Rene's friends (Andy i believe) and asks him about a
certain

person (ignore the Mystery Man at this point - i will
explain later).

Andy states he is possibly a friend of Dick Laurent's. Fred
says "

Isn't Dick dead?" which is a terrible mistake, because Andy
knows that

Fred doesnt know Laurent. Andy is now suspicious of Fred, so
Fred then

kills him (sometime after the party). This leaves Fred with
his

suspicious, mysterious wife, who he then brutally murders.
Shortly

afterwards (the next morning possibly) Fred notices the
police pulling

up the road, he runs to his car and a chase begins down the
"lost

highway." Eventually Fred is caught and is sentenced to
death in the

electric chair.

As he is imprisoned he begins to go slowly insane from the
guilt of his crimes. He develops an alternate personality
(which is almost the exact opposite of his actual one) in
his mind to try and mask his guilt, "remembering in his own
way" his life before he commited the crimes. Slowly the
reality of events starts to seep into his fantasy world
(Rene as Alice, similar dialogue sequences, and Mr.
Eddy/Laurent).

He then dies in the electric chair (essentially, this is
shown in the final car chase scene -which actually takes
place half-way through the actual events- where we see his
face contorting and bright flashing lights).

Now, as for symbols. The Mystery Man is a mental guide
figure that exists in Fred's brain, he doesnt physically
exist, as we never actually see him converse with another
person other then Fred, or be refferred to by anyone other
then Fred (this is even valid in the party scene where Fred
asks Andy about the man in the black jacket, as there is
another man beside The Mystery Man wearing a black jacket
who Andy could see). The Mystery Man leads Fred to commit
his murders. The video tapes are also ficticious items
created by Fred's mind. They are pieces of the actual events
escaping from his surpressed memory, which seep through to
haunt him. The cabin represents his mind or subconcious, and
possibly his brain as a whole. It is where The Mystery Man
resides, and it ignites in flame when Fred is killed in the
electric chair.

So. Those are my theories. There are a few missing pieces
which i havent accounted for, but the points i have made are
my main ones. If anyone wants to chat about it, I'd be happy
to dive deeper into some more specific details of the movie.
:)

hmmm... i guess i should maybe talk about the "Dick Laurent
is dead." factor. we must first acknowledge that the first
time this happens it is The Mystery Man's voice on the
intercom, whereas the second time we see Fred talking over
it. I think this scene could mean several things: 1. Fred's
concience is trying to talk to him through his denial. 2.
Fred's evil guide figure (Mystery Man) is informing him that
his first task is completed (killing Laurent). 3. Lynch
wants to add another degree to the story to make the viewer
try and realize that the story isnt displayed in a linear
fashion by making it appear as a loop.

I believe that the 2nd two theories in combination make the
most sense. :D

I just watched the scene where the mystery man is talking to
the people on the stairs, one lady is obviously looking at
him, I suppose it doesn't mean much if it is portrayed 'how
Fred remembers it'.
The other man, while wearing dark purple/maroon, is pretty
much wearing black I guess.
I wonder if he maybe appears later, like in the forced strip
scene at Laurantes?

im pretty sure he does, as does the girl in the red dress

the fact that its how Fred remembers it def. matters in this

On second thought, I don't know if Lynch would do something
like that. He purposely makes it so that the 'mystery'
can't be certainly solved; I think that would give it too
much certainty.
