to the other track on analord 10 once, while this one ive
listened to countless times - its a bloody aphex smudge. its
got that great tableau thing going on with those classical
piano chords, so much going on.

The thing is fucking insane. It's easily the richest
electronic track I've ever heard. I'd call him a genius
just for it.

I really can't believe the detail and structure. There's
just fucking shit everywhere in it. and I mean FUCKING SHIT

Why the first two Autechre albums are important:
They have to be heard in context, appearing in 1993 and
1994, with the explosion of new electronica, Autechre had a
very distinct sound. Ambient but not hippy or indulgent, hip
hop but no bravado, electronica with a human heart.
Incunabula, heard along with SAW 85-92, and the A.I. series
like Black Dog's "Bytes" and B12's "Electro (Soma)" just
made some kind of perfect sense, a perfectly realised
accumulation of all past music and a map for the future.

Best tracks:
Amber: Piezo: when it breaks down at about 2:50
and the background keyboard dominates, then the rhythm comes
back slightly deflated, skitterish, until it goes again
later leaving just the icy majesty of the
chords/notes/sounds (I'm not musical) ... this is a lengthy
track that doesn't outstay one nanosecond it's welcome, it
goes on getting more minimal and yet more and more
evocative. It's warm, it's simple, it's expansive, it's
uniquely Autechre without the dry academic approach to
"beats". It fucking rules. It's, to steal Black Dog's line,
ambience with teeth. Followed up by the perfect
accompniament Nine, another honorable mention must go
to Yulquen and that I wish the album started with
Montreal.

Incunabula: Where to begin, all of it, apart from Lowind
which doesn't fit, is just unique, genius, spine-tingling,
legendary, pioneering electronic music. What's not to like
about it? But again, if you like Autechre but don't like
this then you have to understand you're not listening to it
in context. I'd hate to hear Draft and then go back to this,
but Draft is the end of a journey that was started here. And
I think they were happier at the begining then their rather
bitter sounding arrival on planet Confield. Bike,
Aut Riche, Basscadet, Maetl for fucks
sake---- 444, 444 is the sound of ... the past
living with the present and the future in the 21st Century,
what the fuck is not to like about this alb

Amber: Piezo

DUDE YES, YES (hahaha sorry I'm being lamely emphatic
today)

btw I like electro soma too; I highly recommend moonshine's
'united states of ambience 2' compilation.. I know another
one in a similar vein which is superior, but harder to
find..

but yeah when the strings dominate in piezo it's incredible.
I just went to further to find similar portions and holy
fuck it's great.

yeah 444 .. I've started liking kalpol introl too lately,
which makes me happy because that was the only one I
initiall didn't like.

When I purchased it, incunabula gave me more joy than almost
any other CD purchase, maybe with the exception of surfing
on sine waves.

Damn that was a great period of time; 1.3 years ago when I'd
never heard autechre and I just blasted through the whole
discography.

I have high faith (and of course some worries) in the next
album. I feel they've been on a path since amber to really
get a unique sound for themselves, and they're really
settling on something now. ORRrr I'm just being gay,
wishful thinking.

speaking of classics, i put on aphex's surfing... the other
day as my kids took a nap in the van.... thats some relaxing
stuff - i love portreath harbour, but all of the tracks are
great, its got a great feeling to it, kind of innocent but
dancy / just plain luchiously great music, sometimes it
can border on repetetive but i like that as well, sometimes.

mrgypsum: To be honest, i never heard Legofeet, which
kind of puts a big hole in my self proclaimed position of
having an authority on early Autechre. And anything of
Gescom leaves me cold, but again, i haven't bought any and I
never heard it. What a complete shit I am. I'm kind of
saving it for the future to be honest.

earthleakage: Well, in this part of the world, I am
completely exposed to the suns cancerous rays without Gaia's
shield of plankton or whatever. And I fucking love it.

Sneak-O I'm very happy that you're happy and that you
have realised that early Autechre is to be enjoyed, not
shuned and poo-poo'ed.

portreath harbour is one of RDJ's crowning
achievements, just... that track has the unquantifiable
elements that equal genius. And it wasn't even on the
original release! What the fuck is that man thinking about!?

I had trouble with the two added tracks, mostly because the
rest is molded into my body, but yeah I'm crazy about them
now. I don't think it's one of his very very best tracks
(say, top five), but I definitely love it. He has one
wicked sense of rhythm, holy shit the interplay.

I hope so, i mean, if you listen to Analords 01 and 02
alongside SAW 85-92, they do sound kind of like a likeness.
I don't know if they are old tracks, or old tracks re-done,
but, i think one has to remember the subtlety of the early
releases when appreciating Analord, because i think that's
where, at least as far as 01 and 02 are concerned, they're
from.
