person + passion = need and desire to create amazing music

selling music = $

$ + person = person - passion

= bad music

This applies to autechre, aphex twin, funkstorung and foo
foo chatiba nogula neftwark sitalk.

nipanchoo.

That theory is terrible. I made a disproof of it in 5
seconds:

yabba dabba doo + 5 = 6

Therefore $ != toadstool.

autechre, aphex twin and other such small time artists don't
make enough money to subtract that much passion
groups like orbital, prodigy and the likes on the other hand
are a different story
plus you also have to think, usually theyre just getting
older too
people's ideas seem less fresh when you've heard all of
their tricks before

There are also severly deluded and/or demented people that
think the fact that their music got them popular and made
them money means it is good, rather than simply being the
best at memetically replicating. For these people:

person + money = person + passion = better subjective (to
them) music = worse objective music.

Since these people operately differently we will call them
"imaginary people" sort of like "imaginary numbers". We will
say that it is illegal to divide an imaginary person by a
zebra just to keep out logic correct here.

extra contract fulfilment tracks

As far as I know, aphex twin was entitled to produce a
certain amount of cd's for warp.

When most artists sign at a label like warp, they may get a
contract entailing they produce 5, 10, 15 cd's for them
within a certain timeframe*. These include singles (with
added material), lp's ep's such. Double cd's count as two
cd's. Notice how aphx's last two releases for warp before
druqs were two ep's, and then he released two double cd's in
about as quick a succession as a label would normally allow.

Generally, when somebody releases a compilation album, its
kind of a quick way to finish off a label contract.

*(Warp is generally pretty liberal with the way their
artists, giving them practically as much time as they want
in between releases, and publishing albums in any format, to
any number the artist wants - so if they want a maximum of
500 eight track cassettes produced, that is pretty much what
warp will do for them as long as they are able to sell.
Honestly, I cant see why so many people bitch about warp,
seeing as its the closest thing I can see to running your
own label, without the financial burden. One of the guys
from warp even sent me a registration code for a program I
was needing quite a few years ago.)

hmm... thanks for the inthornation. I wonder if aphex is
done with warp currently or if The Lord of Anal was released
on warp. I still don't forsee him releasing super wicked
come to daffy part 2 or something though.

I don't know. He has finally agreed to work with bjork,
cause she finally agreed on a price he could live with. I am
pretty sure he is done with warp, although I haven't heard
for certain. He will prolly end up doing something for them
when he runs out of money (again) and they name a price high
enough...

whoa with bjork? I hope she corrects her pitch. are you
sure that's definite? he'll probably make her cry every day
and it'll get canceled =(

hmm let me alter your equation

person makes music
person busts ass to promot distrubute it
person gets signed to a label
person makes money
person then realizes label makes more money than artist
person decides to release shit music til contract is up or
terminated.

then nobody cares about this persons music unless they
release something good. i'm hoping analord gets better.

I have a couple friends in the know, that informed me of
this a while back. This was after that vespertine album, but
before that god awfull voice album... I am pretty sure its
still in the green. I know she has been trying to get him to
collaberate for a while, but unless you are mark bell or
matmos, the bjork collaberator label generally kills your
carreer (and matmoses last album was kind of crappy).

I don't know... even though warp is massive for an
underground label, they are still an underground label, and
their large pressings are no larger than a large labels
extremely limited press of a lesser known bands novelty
album.

There are so many points that money is spent on distributing
music to the consumer. There is artist cost, producer cost,
mastering cost, designer cost, cost of producing cd, cost of
printing album art, cost of marketing cd, cost of
distributing label, cost of shipping cd's, and retail markup
of said cd. If you look at the fact that labels need to set
aside a certain ammount of money from each cd produced to
help fund further albums by other artists, and the cost of
possible expansion, then the label doesn't seem to actually
make that much at all.

That qualifies more for small to medium labels than to
massive labels that produce more than 50 albums a year.
