Why do we try to find meaning in life? Why is it so difficult to accept the possibility that existence is pointless?
Because there are so many clues and feelings in the world that it makes a mystery and a mystery means there's a puzzle to be solved. Once you think like that you're booked on probably finding a meaning, and there' many avenues in life where we're given little indications that the mystery can one day be solved. we get little proofs, – not the big proof – but the little proofs that keep us searching.
From a David Lynch interview.
I know this forum as an EXTREAMLY anti-spiritual, anti-religious vibe, but I'd just like to say he sums up what I believe pretty well. I could never be as skeptical as some; even if the skeptic's path is the true path, taking it would make me far too depressed and empty.

I find it odd that people who ask about the meaning of life turn around and take the position that it's meaningless unless it's somehow pumped up with meaning-juice from their own personal reified fantasy and nightmare personages.

I posted this because I see people here mock spirituality and religion, but I think there are plenty of hints that there is "more" (not least in the realm of the paranormal) and that Lynch quote explained it better then I could. I don't mind atheism, it's when it gets militant and mocking that I hate it.

finding your soulmate and doing things together that you both love. making each other smile, and losing yourself in each other's embraces. becoming one with your environment and clearing your soul from all chemical impurities and bad karma. that's what life is all about.
.. just kidding. this shit is all just meaningless happenstance.

Never mind, can't be assed to explain. Anyway, it's something that opposes most beliefs here, so I'll just run!
Lynch was saying that there is more to our need for a meaning then a mere "need"...he was saying that the reality is that there is "more"....and NOT just because we have some emmotional need for more. That's expanded on later on in the interview when he discusses his religious experiences within Buddism.

"I know this forum as an EXTREAMLY anti-spiritual, anti-religious vibe"
> extremely? come on, aren't you exaggerating a bit? or maybe you come from an extremely religious environment...
or maybe i'm just not seeing it
anyway, i'm not worrying about the meaning of life, i've thought about it several times but i think that... either there is none, either if there is one it's too unclear to determine what it is for sure. in my opinion, i think it's more probable that there is none.
for all religious/spiritual matters, since incertitude doesn't make me depressed nor anxious (a lot of things make me depressed or anxious, but not incertitude), i stay in a position of incertitude which is ok with me : )
i just don't like to think about terrible stuff, like this "heaven/hell" thing...

Excuse me, I am not religious.
That doesn't mean I can't sense the anti religious vibe here though. As an empericist, I beleive in what I experience. And if I've had spiritual experiences, I believe them. I don't need know-all skeptics ranting about how ridiculous a belief in something "more" is (though such people are actually rare.)

with all due respect, how do you expect people here to respond when you've condemned their ideas from your first post? not to mention this is exactly the sort of topic that you must have known would be met with confrontation... so if you didn't want people telling you that they disagree, why post it at all?

I understand your point, and I should have been clearer.
I don't mind skeptics, I simply dislike mocking. There's a massive difference between a rational argument and saying "Christianity is teH gay" or whatever (althought I guess that can be funny.)
I don't mind skeptics, it's when someone believes something and thinks his/hers beliefs superior and mocks other beliefs that I get annoyed.
Hope that cleared things up.
