Autechre Catalogue Number Theory

i wrote about this in another thread, but its title wasn't
very appealing, and i really want to share this theory with
everybody - especially the likes of people who are repelled
from a thread title "OMG I'M BRILLIANT". so this is an aptly
named thread for all the intellectuals on here that will
read and give this some serious thought. i think this is a
pretty bitchin' theory, and those who haven't heard have got
to know about it.

i have summarized all main points of the theory that were
realized in the previous thread.

enjoy!!

---------------------

followers of the Warp label are aware that they catalogue
their LP's with the title of their label and a number.

example:

Autechre: Incunabula is WARP17.
Autechre: Amber is WARP25.
Boards Of Canada: Music Has The Right To Children is WARP55.

these catalogue numbers are assigned based on the order of
release. right?

yes - but not all the time.

when Autechre's "Confield" was released, it was given
WARP128. it should've been WARP88. they jumped up.

i figured this was a commentary from WARP that's the album
is ahead of its time. the music is an apt proof of that
theory.

now, the last album that Warp released was catalogued
WARP127. now is the time that WARP128 should be released -
but "Confield" took it. but what do we get instead? the
announcement of Autechre's NEW album "Untilted". and what's
the catalogue number? WARP180.

this means 2 things: 1) WARP is playing the numbers
purposely, and 2) WARP180 is probably a commentary on the
nature of their new album. EVEN FURTHER ahead of its
time?perhaps it means they're doing a total 180 in their
direction. i think they're going in a more dancy direction -
hence, the touring.

and what is a 180 curve anyway? a straight line? or, one
might call it, an untilted line?

I think with most labels the catalogue number is assigned
when the project is first talked about, which is why you
sometimes get albums released with very low catalogue
numbers well after the catalogue #'s have passed that point.
Eg. Planet Mu has been talking about releasing the new Jega
album for quite some time but it still has not materialized.
They are now talking about a summertime release, and it's
listed in the 20's, even though the Mu catalogue is well
past the 100 mark.

but Jega was not purposely done. It was supposed to be
released a long time ago, its just still in the works. They
should have sceduled it for ziq200 :P

i think you are all obsessive fanboys. ae make music with
computers. if its base 2 its binary but it could be
anything. even horsefactory said he read it wrong!! so ae
used powers of 2 for some releases. omgwtfbbq, so cool, a
hidden reference to mathematics!!!!!!11oneone

im too lazy to check but im SERIOS. i think gantz graf,
confield and draft 7.30 used 64, 128 and 256 respectively.

offline JAroen from the pineal gland on 2005-01-23 23:52 [#01473749]

yeah i checked. they dont always use powers of 2, just
numbers that look 'nice' on occasion

ROFLMAYONAISE now im a fanboy too!!!

Warp has been doing that with certain artists to indicate
how ahead of the time they feel the album is.

You will notice that with a couple other albums as well. I
can't think of any off hand other than the team shadatek
release.

i sort of go in for the 180-degree-turn thing, its possible

but when draft 7.30 was coming out, people were saying, yes,
this is the most accessible autechre to date

and then i listened to it, and i was like, that is incorrect
information there sir

Yeah. I concur. I do agree that autechre's influences were
most easily recognizable with draft 7.30 though, another
thing that those same people seemed to be saying.

warps albums are 'warp' and a number, and their singles are
'wap' and a number, yet their 'we are reasonalbe people'
album was technically a single, and it was 'wap100', even
though they had not reached that far in their singles.

The word "Untilted" doesn't even exist. What a ridiculous
album name. I should have thought of something better.

yeah, "untilted" is technically not a word, but this
wouldn't be the first time Autechre made up words. is
"confield" a word?

I want to bump this thread to get people thinking about how
the catalogue numbers often have something to do with the
nature of the album.

It seems Quaristice is WARP333? What could this mean? Vinyl
plays at 33.3 RPM right?

Its significant for maybe 2 reasons IMO;

1. 3+3+3 = 9 - this is the 9th album.
2. Don't expect a new Autechre album for a long time?

it's half of 666 but since it's a double album (or IS it?),
it's like double the fun...

I like that vinyl-speed theory as well. Also, they have a
song called 444.

it's a CONSPIRACY, but 'they' don't want you to know...
Autechre used to make me numb, but now they make me number.

haha..this is like a tool thread. and most people who search
and search tool songs, art, lyrics, etc. to find the hidden
meaning, usually find nothing other than long drawn out
theries that make the band chuckle. even people on radiohead
boards were all of a sudden fibonacci number theorists who
found the hidden connection between in rainbows and ok
computer only to have the band laugh at such an idea.

while i do think there is probably some meaning behind their
album titles, its probably entirely up to ae to select a
number that they feel is significant to them or the album
its tagged to and nothing more.

I just think it's a spotty kid on work experience at Warp.
He or she was asked to think of numbers for upcoming CDs and
vinyl and decided to make shit up to get the fanboi's
creaming. That's all.

I like how 3+3+3=9 and its their 9th LP; wasn't somebody
saying in the Quaristice thread that there was nothing in
the title that hinted at it being their 9th, when usually
there is something...

3*3*3=27 too!
