I'm going to go work on Max/MSP but that doesn't mean I
don't love you all, especially qrter and his cockles, and
professor sneakattack the interdimensional rock star.

Max/MSP, haahahah music geek.

haahahah music geek in denial.

I'm not a music geek. I don't even make music.

No really I don't. Just just mess about with sounds
occassionally then piss myself off completely and go back to
living a normal life. Besides my girlfriend will be here
for the next week so I will be too busy to do anything.

shit I didn't realize she was long distance! Hopefully not
too far; that sucks.

some day I'll make some electronic music.. it will suck..
but I'll probably enjoy it anyway.

She's not...it's just she won't move in with me permanently
with me for some reason at the moment...I wear her down or
out or something :(

Do you do any music at the moment? Like writing melodies
and stuff? If so send me something and let me use it for a
track :)

Points: 6049 Status: Lurker | Followup to ecnadniarb: #01462764

heh. I composed some towards my music degree but it's
hopelessly bad. My harmony is really stupid too..

sucks about her not moving in. Man I can be so repellant in
real-life personal interaction that it wouldn't work for me
either (no girlfriend at the moment, of course). Anyway I
hope you figure that bit out, since you like her so much.

Doesn't matter about her moving in at the moment. I enjoy
my space when she's not here and I have to travel a bit
myself these days so it works well for both of us.

Send me some of your stuff anyway...I would be interested in
having a go :)

ok, that's good.

well, my stuff is written down and packed away somewhere..
your interest means a lot to me but the shit's really REALLY
bad. Also none of it electronic, all classical..

when I do electronic, I'll write a synthesis program myself
(not a plugin or something using a library; I'll actually go
from scratch, sending bits to the audio buffer). My rough
timeline is to start it some time in the next 5 years =(
thanks again for asking.

pretty lame stuff, dude. I'm really obsessed with technical
ability on instruments and sometimes my music does way too
much hard shit and misses substance. It's really fucking
stupid.

Okay, so I'm procrastinating again.

While I imagine it would be interesting to make music by
screaming ones and zeros into a microphone to a voice
recognition program hooked to some kind of logic gate, I
don't know why you'd do it unless you were somehow
dissatisfied with the existing technology.

I mean, not every flautist carves his instrument out of a
man's tibia.

The only reason I'm bothering with Max is I fucking loathe
every sequencer I've tried (okay I loathe FL less) and it's
the quickest way to build the tool I dream of.

There are a couple of reasons.

first, my greatest interest in the whole world is rational
intelligence, which I wish to implement with computers (a
fancy way of saying 'computer science student specializing
in artificial intelligence', which is still a little smug).
I basically want a computer to dream sound, and make it
really good.

Secondly, I want it completely algorithmic.. it may suck..
it's an experiment. I've written programs to generate
landscapes, and it's amusing how easy that is compared to
generating random sound and making it pleasing. And think
about it. you can see so many landscapes (I'm talking real
life here), and think ahhh that's beautiful. But how often
do you think that about an ambient sound? The brain's sound
processing is much shittier than visual processing, so sound
needs much more structure. One reason I want it algorithmic
is the challenge, another is to have it never end!

anyway, I think it'd be fun.

I speaking vaguely here because it's just something I want
to do, I have basically NO ideas right now, and definitely
no GOOD ones =(

erm, to paraphrase that wreck of a post, the goal isn't to
make good music. The goal is to make a program which can
generate music. And I hope it makes good music, but it will
probably become VERY difficult and I'll stop working on it,
or work on it very slowly (I have many 'more important'
projects to work on =( ).

the smartest person I've ever met is also the clearest, most
succinct person I've ever met. holy shit I'm having trouble
learning from that.

It reminds me of the Indian story of the guru and his
student - the student practiced and meditated for 20 years
and finally was able to walk on water. He walked across the
river to visit his master and tell him. The master hit him
with a stick and said "You idiot! You could have taken the
ferry for two cents!"

I tell this from memory so perhaps the details are wrong - I
think maybe one of them was a vampire or a robot.

hahahahahahahaha

hey by the way, if you're ever interested, look up a
mathematician named ramanujan. He's this wicked indian
guy, totally self-taught, who the greatest mathematician in
england at that time (hardy) brought over and basically
attempted to decipher his theorems all day.

for the last year of his life, the story goes, he was face
down in bed writing theorems (without proof!) as fast as he
could in a note book.

I saw one of these theorems on the last day of my number
theory class, and I almost started yelling, and most of the
class was swearing. They are things so alien and
uncomfortable that the man must have had the brain of god to
come up with them.

anyway.

going to buy this book on Vedic mathematics that is supposed
to have all kinds of shortcuts to help you do math in your
head.

I saw that mentioned once and it may have even been you.. is
that possible? this was many months ago, maybe 8 or so.

yeah I've shied away from more computational maths.. though
I find calculus to be pretty bad ass. I'm more interested
in algebra..

i saw some vedic tricks once and thought it was pretty cool.

It's like a Rod Serling curse to know everything unless you
have the ability to cope with the knowledge. Otherwise you'd
spend your days and nights in the foetal position.
