dude, I spy some heightened awareness of brush types. Have
you tried the calligraphy pen tool?

DUDE I have lots of work to be doing write now, but instead
I'm playing sonic CD

It sucks. Suppose I want to make a transparent black complex
thing move counterclockwise while making a second complex
black thing move counterclockwise (interacting
transparently). This isn't possible because when you make
transparent layers and save as a gif, every layer is visible
in every frame. And if you try to have a white background or
something, you bury the last frame in white, making it
impossible to have transparent interaction.

There's simple animation experiments I can't do with the
gimp. That'd be cool, for example, to have this animation
only 1 quadrant of 4; top and bottom corners rotating
oppositely. Then you could play around with phasing, making
it totally bizarre and fucked up. But since the gimp sucks I
guess I can't.

there is a solution; in the layers menu there is a 'merge
down option', which does the obvious thing; note that it
DOES respect any settings you put on the layer.

of course this isn't optimal because you need to manually go
through and merge down everywhere you want to, but if you do
it right before saving it should be too bad.

two hints: you can save to the 'xcf' format, which stores
layer information and other shit. it's a HUGE file though,
since there's all this extra data and lossless pixel storage
to boot. Second hint: increase your maximum level of undos
(its in the preferences). there's also a pref for making it
friendlies to low memory systems (not valuable enough to get
it's own hint).

for that one what you can use is the 'layer mask' option.
what this does is a 'mask' to each layer, which sets (based
on white and black in the mask) where the layer is visible
and where it isn't. masks can have grey tones for partial
transparency.

furthermore, you can select the mask and copy it, and then
paste it in another layer's mask to easily copy the effect
around.

also, 'duplicate layer' copies masks. to apply the mask,
the right click menu on a layer in the layers window has an
apply command.

I think I did play sonic cd for dreamcast once. It was a
memorable experience, mostly because that was the first time
I played a game on a new generation console. But otherwise
didn't like it much gameplaywise. I remember one part where
you're knuckles searching for emeralds in a huge world. That
was when I was irrated with the "search for stuff" gameplay
in most games... the worst of these is probably banjo
kazooie for n64. They have all this awesome 3d stuff and
they have the player go around collecting stuff... opgi.
This post sucks but I guess I'll post it anyway.

oh hmmmmmmmmmmmm that's different than the one I'm doing,
this is one is for sega CD. It came out before sonic 2.
It's ok, but it has some great music and a few ok levels.
Mostly I'm just pandering to procrastination.

I shall teach you to be a gimp, truly.

you know what would be cool? you should tell me to make
plugins! yeah. I should learn how anyway. this post sucks
too.

another fun thing to play with is in the
layers->colors->levels controls. For instance if you blur
something and then fuck with that, you can control how
diffuse/sharp the blur is.. can make some neat shapes.

other fun thing is using the bezier tool for selections..

ANYWAY. anything I make with this program looks like
complete ass.

The gimp needs a complete overhaul more than a plugin. Do
you know the definition of plug in by the way. Everything
uses plugins it seems. I guess the original code was set up
easily to accept sections of new "plug in" code? I'll search
wikipedia, the place where everyone deletes all my entries.

ahahhhahahahahahah

plug-in has an intentionally generic name because it has
generic purpose; it's something which adds functionality to
a program. There are programs like winamp which grant
plugins far more control than what gimp allows. The goal is
to make it wasy for others to extend a program without
having to futz much with the internals, and also for people
to be able to install/manage these extensions easily, and
control whether they are loaded at all..

another thing.. under filters->animation there's something
to reduce the size of animated gifs. I don't know how well
it works but with the added complexity in the image from all
sorts of transparency/shading/etc you'll probably need some
help with the size..

I'd like to point out that my eye normally has saturn behind
the pupil. that's customary.

I should have made the ring going in front of the pupil; ah
well.

Warnings

The program(s) might crash unexpectedly or behave otherwise
strangely. (But of course, so do many commercial programs on
Windows.)

HO HO HO HO HO THATS SO FUNNY HA HA HA HA

I have it for windows but I recommend something else. -V-
who comes here sent me photoshop, macromedia flash and adobe
illustrator 10, ha ha. I tried flash once and couldn't get
it to work and have been waiting for a new computer or
something since this one sucks so much. Maybe I should just
try them on here anyway. I may be crazy but whever I
uninstall stuff, then look at the portion of space being
used on my c drive, it seems to stay slightly higher even
after I uninstall it.
