Just started to listen to his stuff... it's interesting to
hear one of his mad experimental pieces and all of a sudden
hear something that madlib sampled on madvillainy.

I love his stuff where he's riding the border between
traditional and experimental - he does some cool jazz, big
band and miles davis-y stuff and then he goes off the hook
and then he pulls it back (or not).

lotses of samples

Sun Ra is great, my local music store has a large collection
of his discography in stock which is handy. Favourites so
far are Space Is The Place, Lanquidity & Solar Myth Approach
Volume 1.

End of track 6 on this one. Not one of the best
albums to start with though - I started with the "greatest
hits" (?) and Angels and Demons / Nubians of Plutonia -
they're more traditionally musical sounding.

Hey. I bought the yo la tengo cover-single thingy of sun
ra's "nuclear war". I thought it was very bad. I
guess i should investigate a bit further though, though.

oh yeah well Nuclear War is not one of his high points imho
- don't know what people like about it -

and the yo la tengo cover turned me off yo la tengo.

that sample is way way extended on the original Jaylib
bootleg... it takes up the entire track and we get to hear
the whole "you've lost your heavenly right" monologue... i
only say this because i like to take every opportunity to
recommend that people track down the original jaylib
bootleg, because if features more Quas, and more wicked
Jaydee beats... some of which should are much better than
what got released... i'm hoping for some more Sun Ra recs,
as i've been trying to get into his stuff for years... i'm
not sure if i've ever given it a decent listen, though...

Sun Ra is great - you never know what to expect from album
to album or even from track to track. Sometimes it's
"normal" music and sometimes it's madness.

In most of it you can feel them groping for something
unknown though, which is all I ask for in my favorite
music.

I'll keep an eye out for the jaylib bootleg.

Entities. Works. Things. Nouns.

Good stuff.
