Anything by native instruments is a good bet.

Go for pro53

Although I like the FM7 more, and Intakt, absynth and guitar
rig are the best.

favourite vsti's - Zebra, Chameleon, Reaktor, Albino and
Absynth are my ones of choice.

Ableton Live, Digital Performer and Reaktor are my
workhorses.

Generally speaking anything by Arturia, Native Instruments,
Spectrasonics or G Media is going to be good.

i'm wondering how will you make beatz with a synth like
pro53 or novation?

Play with the noise+sine waves and their filters and adsr.

There are like, 50 different presets for beat sounds.

for that retro sound: arturia cs80v, arturia moog, and
absynth to smooth out the dodgy bits - NI battery/NI intakt
for drums and detritus, and the (FREE) kjaerhaus classic
line of plugins for effects. synth1 is a nice free bit of
kit as well.

What makes Battery/Intakt better than Kontakt?

tweakbench do some really cool effects and instruments,
and they're all free.

yeah... I forgot about the arturia synths... moog modular v
and the minimoog both sound great... cs80v is amazing.

List of VSTi I suggest;
Absynth
FM7
Vokator
Pro53
Moog Modular V
Minimoog
CS80v
Rhino
z3ta
imOscar
scorpion3
VirSyn Cube
Discovery 1 & 2
Elektrik Piano
Intakt
Kontakt
RM4
Groovecube Exiton
TBL Bassline
Neon

I know there are a lot that I missed. But these ones are
ones I can suggest right now.

All good at their own things... some better than others, but
these are all ones I have had either much use it, or find
have found much potential with. If you are going to go for
ambient music, get absynth first above anything else. You
can texture any sound with a pad made in absynth, and the
end will be much richer and more appealing. For making
beats, absynth is also great. Look at some of the patches
that richard devine made, and you will see. If you just want
a sampler, I would say go for intakt first, cause that is
easier to learn and work with than most of the other
samplers out there. You can just load individual beats, or
load loops, and cut them up and map them accross the
keyboard. And it doesn't take more than 5 seconds to get all
your samples maped, unlike other similar programs that take
about half a minute or more just to set up one octave
range.

For effects, that is more difficult. There are so many.
Wav's are all good, and guitar rig sounds really nice
(although I haven't used it in music yet).

Kontakt is meant more for working with a single sample, and
Intakt is meant for working with many. They are both
superior in their own way, but I get much more use out of
Intakt.

i'll say it again, as regards effects: the kjaerhaus
'classic' line. free, and studio quality compressor, delay,
chorus, limiter, and all the other usual suspects. i'm lazy
so i'm not googling for the damn things, but giving them
away for free is borderline crazy, such is the quality.
