Fun Midi Controller Decision Time Fun

So I wants a USB Midi controler keyboard. Basically for
noodling on Reason, and in future for other stuff when and
if I feel like it. As a beginner with all this, I had
planned to go with the Oxygen8 because its cheap. It would
now appear I will be aided in my purchase and hence prices
over £150 might be acceptable.

What do you suggest? I could get Evolution MKs, Oxygen8,
Radiums... I don't really know which one to choose. Or any
other brands...

Guh?

What kind of sound card do you have? If you have a piece of
crap consumer card (Creative, or something abhorrent built
onto your motherboard) you'll find it annoying to play
software synths because you'll have a high latency - a delay
between playing a note and hearing it.

You might want to get one of the ones that has a USB audio
interface built in so you get a reasonable latency (10ms or
less). The Ozone has an audio interface.

I've got one of the Radium61s. It's awesome for messing
around with stuff in cubase, and I recommends it, unless you
want one with button controls. I can't see how they would be
that useful though.

I have used this one before. It costs between $200-$270 in
places that I have shoped, and it is the one that I intend
to buy this christmas. Its reliable, has 8 knobs, 8 sliders
and 9 buttons, all assignable.

PCR-A30

I used to have a little knob unit that I used for reason and
reaktor. It was a crap controller, that barely worked with
my OS. It was always loosing communication with my computer
and the software, but when it did work, it made all my
automations sound more authenic, and it was easier to do all
my knob tweaks... Controllers rock!!

I have an oxygen8 and I have no problem with latency. It
works fine for me and what I do...

i have the radium49, i love it, it's a good size but
sometimes i still feel that i should have gotten a 61
instead..

i dont think i would recommend the ozone simply becouse it
has way too small amounts of keys.. i know you might not
wanna use it for "playing" but theres a big risk that you
will want to in the future, theres allso a big risk that you
will want a better audio interface so i suggest buying
another soundcard of some type (if you dont have one) you
can get good soundcards these days for a really small amount
of money, i got the audiophile 24/96, works very well and
doesnt cost much at all (around 1200 dollars maybe) im not
sure about the different values of the differnt cash types
around the world..

anyway, make sure you try out whatever stuff your going to
buy in the store first "get the feel"

good luck

I might be buying an Oxygen8 in January. I think it will
rock, and I'm looking forward to hooking up my tr-606 &
tr-707 to the comp (I have put off buying an usb
midi-interface for far to long), and give me the impetus to
retrofit my PolySix and SH-09.

...Until then I will Fav+ this and do a thourough research
before acquiring said object.

Keep the recommendations coming!

Holy Shit, you can do that w/the Rolands?!

When the 707 came out the MIDI was still quite fresh, so to
appeal to the owners of older Roland gear they included a
DIN-Sync option on it. So if you set the 707 as master, it
will send both MIDI and analog sync signals to control the
stuff. It's awesome :D

And if you meant retrofitting, i meant buying a kit to the
PolySix and solder it myself and getting one of those
CV/Gate trigger thingies from Kenton for the SH-09 :)

I want to use it with my iBook G4... I don't know but I
suppose it has a crap sound card. I wanted to buy a firewire
soundcard to get a second sound output, until I saw how
expensive they are and I feel in way over my head with all
this hardware. I don't understand anything about audio
hardware. Plus I can't afford it, I don't know how you can
call $1200
cheap.

I do already play keyboard just for the sake of playing so
it would be cool to get a 61 key. Would I have a serious
latency problem?

i have an oxygen8 . its great, i can turn it round and use
it in traktor using the fader as the crossfade and the knobs
as filters. and it can fit in my backpack and seems alot
more durable then the other controllers out there. its all
plastic so it you dont feel bad when you knock it against
something.

i know what you mean, it's hard to buy stuff.. especially as
you want it cheap.. with quality.

perhaps you can skip the idea of a new soundcard for awhile
and try out a midi controller/keyboard with your current
soundcard ? it cant hurt, i know there are great free ASIO
drivers avaidable that can really improve your latency even
with a shitty crap soundcard.
Before i got myself an better soundcard i went from 27ms to
7! that's really nice.. think i got those drivers on a cd
that came along with a studio magazine.

Hmm it's not easy =D im trying to think of something to say
that might help you out but i cant =/ so good luck

i have the oxygen 8, but i'd rather like a type with more
knobs. and i really don't use the keyboard much anyway. so
next time i think i'll go for the Behringer BCR2000 with 32
knobs! :) or maybe the one with both knobs and faders.

Thank you Mr _awt_. I guess i'll just get it now and then
work on the sound card situation...

How come all the midi controllers are USB but the audio
interfaces don't have a USB port? Would I just plug the
controller into the normal port?

PS can someone give me £200

I got a good deal for an Evolution MK-225C with a price of
approx. £100. It's an older model of the MK-425C, but I
guess it will do nicely. I'll probably pick it up tomorrow
at my post office if it arrives, so I guess I'll give my
verdict in a few days.

i've got the m-audio 61 semi weighted keyboard...and its
great. now all i need is a good software sampler program so
i can play piano on it...any suggestions on that?

I got the Radium 61 in the end, I had to send it back
because one of the keys didn't work, but the new one works
and it seems all good so far.

about the sound card thing, because of os x 'core audio' you
probably won't need one. from native instruments:

________
Very Low Latency under Mac OS X

As we mentioned above, today's Mac sound chips, both for Mac
OS 9 and escpecially those for Mac OS X, offer a good sound
quality and very low latency. In most instances the latency
is low enough to play musical instruments live without an
audible delay. If, however, you want better sound quality,
and more in- and output options than merely a stereo in/out,
it's recommended that you acquire some sort of external
audio card (via the FireWire or USB port).
__________
