what will happen if I try to put a processor that MAY be
too good/fast for the motherboard on it just to test if it
really IS too good? Can stuff burn and catch fire, or can
anything get broken at all? Or is there some failsafe/thing
that just won't let me turn the computer on if I try it?

hmm..

the thing is I've got an 866 mhz processor from another comp
that crashed utterly (its motherboard blew up), but my comp
is an antique at 266, and I doubt that the 866 would work on
that motherboard...

Oh, how I'd like to feel that I actually needed a
better computer so that I'd bother to actually spend money
on buying some overloaded stuff, but I feel like music,
movies and alcohol are more important, so I just keep on
spending my money on that... computers are WAY too expensive
for what you actually get from them... (as opposed to
alcohol, which lasts AT LEAST two hours.. hahah!)

quess it's worth the money, buying a good one. nowadays you
get alot for your money as well.

Yeah won't work,it prolly won't even fit, as socket size
varies.
Motherboard won't recognize it, is the proc from the same
manufacturer as the old one, is the faster processor from
the same line as the older one, etc. etc.
