..is slowly starting this weekend. On monday morning I'm on full alert against carbs. My goal is 75kg, I weigh 90kg now. I'm starting this together with a friend at work. His goal is to get down from about 120kg to double digits. It's good to have a friend to support you.
I just cleaned out my fridge of most of the evil-carb stuff. I saved the ketchup for people visiting and so on. The hardest part is to figure out what to eat. I know Atkins.com has menus for the first week, but still.. I need to replace my morning baguette with something like fried eggs and bacon or something. Atleast they have that in the restaurant at work.
I'm not worried that I can't cut it for two weeks. I already cut off sugar back in april this year. I was down to an incredible 81kg this summer, but here I am again at a nice even 90. They say 75-76 is a healthy weight for someone who is 175cm. <--me
I'll keep you posted. Check out the site, it's amazing what you're allowed to eat and terrifying what you have to leave out.
/Jonne, 91kg as I type this

the BBC made a documentary last year in which they tried to find out why the Atkins diet worked.
they came to the conclusion that the people who did the Atkins diet in their test lost more weight because of the fatty foods they were eating - it made them eat relatively less than the other groups, which basically comes down to the general "eat less calories diet".
except that dieticians also fear how good it can be for someone to eat that much fat, on the longer run (for your arteries, heart, etc.).
good luck, though. :)

diets are kind of silly really..sure you should mind what you eat, but not overdoing something, and using as much of fresh fruit and vegetable along with exercise should do the trick. the point is exercise and combinating different food..with as little of suggar, salt and fat as possible.

atkins is for people who are too lazy to exercise. just exercise and eat healthy and you'll be fine.
you need carbs. it's healthier to eat carbs and exercise, than to not eat carbs and be weak all the time.
fuck atkins. it's a fad. it's not healthy.
you NEED carbs.

it's the easy way out.
like wtf. it's common sense. it's not hard to lose weight. it's not hard to be healthy. and if you're gonna value being thin over health, then you deserve to be fat and to struggle with fad diets.

Last year in university my roommate was on atkins and I would offer him some falafel and he was like "I dont need those unhealthy carbs" and then proceeds to eat a huge MOOSE STEAK every second day.

yea. it's ridiculous. i mean, just look in supermarkets.. there's an atkins alternative to every product. it's obviously a gimic.. an unhealthy 'get thin fast' fad. ask any nutritionist.
i dunno. i think in our society we emphasize too much on being thin instead of being healthy. if people would focus on health, being over-weight and obese wouldn't be such an epidemic.

Fat doesn't seem to do the same kind of damage to your heart etc. when you don't eat carbs or sugar. Maybe I saw the same documentary, but they had this 6 month test and the cholesterol values were fine for the people on Atkins'.
Exercise is my biggest problem. I do take huge walks with my cameras to keep my blog running, but they want you to "exercise" (read aerobics) 45mins a day. I wonder if work counts? :) It can get pretty hectic.

yes, but those tests are all short-term.
the point a lot of dieticians are making is that they really worry about the long-term effects - granted, the only way to find that is in time, but they do feel there is a need to worry.

your body needs lots of fruits and vegetables and whole grains. i mean, they are all proven to prevent cancer and other diseases. the health benefits are immense and yes, all these things do have carbs in them. the atkins diet doesn't offer enough foods high in anti-oxidants and disease fighting nutrients.
carbs are energy.. sure a lot of carbs are bad for you, that's why you eat complex carbs.. whole grains. you NEED energy. it takes a lot out of your body to feed purely on lipids. you need a balance of carbs to be able to use excess lipids on your body as energy. it takes times.
if you balance whole grain carbs with exercise, you'll see results, be healthy. it might take longer than a diet fad.. but you'll be 100% more likely to maintain for the rest of your life. you know.. make health your lifestyle not a diet.
unless you have a big date or an award show to go to on the weekend... but then you should just go on a 3 day coke binge and you'll lose like 10-15 pounds!

Atkins is a good diet. Our bodies are not made for taking care of all those carbs , our bodies own energy system starts to work again when you cut down on carbs. We are meat and vegetable eaters and thats that.
No carbs at all isn't good either tho , i for example eat porage every morning , but that is basicly all the carbs i need.
but eating a big plate of pasta with a baguete on the side for dinner and then go to bed a couple of hours later is idiotic (atleast eat whole grain pasta for gods sake!).
And you should mix all those stakes with stuff like salmon and grilled tuna for more "good fats"
It is like that with many things. People who use alot of lip gloss (i think its called?) eventually get dry lips cause the body stops to take care of it on its own. Same with stuff like anti dandruff shampo , if you use it too much.
Too much carbs is crap!

fruits and vegetables ARE carbs. they consist of sugar units. our bodies ARE designed to use carbs as our main source of energy. there's good 'bready' carbs too.. whole grains, nuts, seeds, legumes. you don't have to eat pasta and bread to get carbs.
"Our bodies are not made for taking care of all those carbs , our bodies own energy system starts to work again when you cut down on carbs."
haha .. carbs are our MAIN source of energy! we have tons of specific enzymes to break down carbs for quick energy results.
what are you talking about.

Of course you have to live a little too . Like once or twice per week i eat something unhealthy like a big fat pizza with extra everything. Especially during the winter being a mailman in sweden on a bike everyday in the snow and then all my hours at the gym it really does more good then damage. If i didn't i would look and feel like gollum or iggy pop haha!.

Milk, Coffee (lots of it), diet coke, all kinds of fruit, bread (lots of it), pasta almost daily at work.. umm, cheese (the wrong kind), fat foods in general. Basically alot of the good stuff. I don't eat much sugar though, intentional candy type sugar I mean. There's sugar in bread and all kinds of food, but I haven't really paid attention, since it's supposed to be healthy :)
"our bodies ARE designed to use carbs as our main source of energy..." With the risk of sounding like a fanboy again, remember that a high-carb diet is a pretty recent thing in the history of mankind. Meat was the only way for people for a long time, before we learned to grow high-carb foods like grains.

i try to stick to vegetables, fruits, whole grains, lotsa water, tea, and hemp/spirulina/chlorella proteins. i'm obsesed with health though. i get really paranoid about cancer and diseases from processed foods.

There was a documentary about the atkins diet here too. And the conclusion was that the protein in the food people eat on the atkins diet makes them fell less hungry.
But the danger is that, body needs carbs and shit. On the Atkins diet people eat mostly Fat and Protein.
And did you know that if the food you are eating is high fat, it feeds you apetite and you eat more than you should.

Atkins sucks. Here's what you do, couldn't be simpler.
Find out how many calories you eat a day. Find out how many minutes you have to run to burn those calories.
Then just run, and when you've burned it all away, run for a couple of more minutes.
