Metroid Prime: Echoes

Just finished about the first two hours of this game...holy
shit.

It's pretty damn amazing. A lot like the first but even more
polished (if that's possible) Amazing atmosphere, great
control, decent story so far and a very cool menu interface.
This game looks like it's only getting better.

Go get it! Or Samus will kick your ass.

we should just drop the music pretense and turn xltronic
into a big video game circle jerk.

Well right now there's way more kickass games coming out
than new albums from electronic artists. If these musicians
weren't playing all these great games we'd probably have a
lot more music to talk about:)

I almost forgot about it! It's underhyped compared to what
it deserves. I'm so psyched for it, hopefully I can get it
or at least rent it tonight. The art direction looks so
stellar.

This recent deluge of great games is like the climax of my
life so far.

Nobody seems to care about this game, here or elsewhere. I
still can't find GTA- SA, it's flying off the shelves, and
Halo 2 is sold out everywhere here, but I just went to
Walmart and there were like 20 copies of Echoes and not a
sign of life around the Gamecube cabinet (there were at
least 2 people at the desk looking for GTA). What gives?

Anyway, I'm playing it. What were the graphic artists
smoking? This environments sure are... alien. What a game. I
feel like a needle in a disgusting, gooey haystack.

I would be getting this game now if mgs3 wasn't coming out.
I will eventually get this though.

Seriously there's just too many games. I want to get Mario
Tennis, heard it the greatest multiplayer. And I want MGS3.

But I'm getting the DS with at least a game or two and the
funds are running low. Plus I guess I have to buy people
christmas presents. I hate Christmas.

This game is kicking my ass. So cool. Just regained my
bombs. So sweet.

there are seriously too many games comming out. I want one
of those Nintendo DS so i can go back and play all the other
game boy games I missed out on, but seriously, I have HL2
and GTA:SA, I'll be busy for at least a year.

So how's it coming? I'm about halfway through the Torvus
Bogs, I think. The world seems a bit bigger than Prime's,
and there's more ''landmarks'', so to speak.

I scan and read everything... a nice storyline that
literally doesn't force itself down your throat.

I'm thinking about getting a DS for Hunters, looks a lot
better than the pixelated blur that was at E3. And Mario
64-DS, which looks pretty awesome. Crazy Legs Luigi is back
to his Mario 2 tricks.

But I also want a PSP, for Metal Gear Acid, Devil May Cry
PSP, and Gran Turismo. Fuck video games.

Honestly... no. Not to me. Atmospherically speaking, yes.
The game's ambience is perfect. There's a really ominous
Terminator-ish thundering beat near the start that creeped
me out, but it's not much a track on its own.

There aren't many catchy tunes... Prime 1 set a tone, but it
also had some really catchy stuff and neat sounds (that
theremin and the remixed tunes). Chozo Ruins, Tallon
Overworld 1 and 2, Meta-Ridley, the Drifts, that underwater
Frigate piano music, Magmoor (that rad Super Metroid Norfair
tune)... a lot of tunes I actually still listen to,
stand-alone. And that awesome title screen Metroid theme.

I can't think of any tunes from Echoes that I want to hear
away from the game. But I'm only about 6.5 hours and 27% in,
so... maybe it gets better. I do hear there's a really
awesome remix later on.

It's very sullen. No driving beat like the one in Chozo
Ruins, that whiplash percussion and throbbing bass. This one
is really ambient and moody. It works and does the job to a
T, but I don't like it as much the first Prime.

(this game is superior in every other way, though)

Metroid Fusion had a great soundtrack, even though it was a
diluted Metroid game with no sense of urgency.

Have you ever played Super Metroid before, or are you
playing it for the first time in years or something? That
game is tougher to deal with than either Metroid Prime,
man... the puzzles and destinations can be so vague, and
there's no hint pop-ups to guide you. And the map isn't as
useful, lacks color coding and all those keys. Sometimes it
feels like you're looking for a needle in a haystack in the
older Metroid games. But I love it.

And yeah, Echoes is better than the first Metroid Prime,
though it's pretty much the same thing. I think Prime pushed
the Gamecube to the limits... Echoes just refines the
gameplay experience. The environments are busier and more
interesting. There's more stuff to do.

Huh? Wuh? Buh?

I guess someday it'll be inevitable, some video games will
be frowned on by some for being pretentious. I guess Metroid
is pretty artsy fartsy. It's the Brian Eno of FPS'.

Hey hello, it's been a while since my last post. I migrated
to a msgboard about videogames... since that was pretty much
all I talked about on xltronic anyway. ;)

But since Echoes isn't out in europe yet, I thought I'd ask
here. How hard is the game? Alot of reviews say it's harder
than the 1st one... but how bad is it really?

I'm really not good in First person shooters at all, infact
I don't even really like them. It took me a while to get
into the first Metroid Prime because of that... but
eventually I grew to like it. I love the automatic aiming
and the lock-on mechanism. It takes away alot of the
problems I usually have with other FPS-games. The entire
game was also much more about exploring than shooting...
which was good. And I really did enjoy the feeling of
solitude and emptiness... just like in the old metroid
games. :)

However the last part of the game was way too hard for me. I
did manage to finish it eventually... but I hardly enjoyed
it anymore. Around the point where you first entered the
phazon mines... all the enemies after that were basically
Space Pirates. All of the color-coded to only be harmed by
one specific weapon, some of them even invisible without the
right visor... that was so annoying. They always managed to
sneak up on me and deplete half of my energy tanks before I
found the right weapon+visor to get a lock on them. The
Omega Pirate almost made me cry... and I won't even mention
Ripley!

So, taking all that into consideration... do you guys think
I'll be able to enjoy Echoes? Or is it Phazon-Mines
difficulty right from the beginning with Omega Pirate-like
bossfights around every corner? The idea of a dark world
where even the atmosphere is deadly kinda scares me...

The game definitely seems harder than Prime. The bosses are
a bit more brutal... no boss in Prime gave me problems until
the Omega Pirate, but a few in Echoes have brought me near
death before beating them. The battles have a bit more
twitch action, and less gimmicky strategy.

But the gauntlet of Space Pirates in the Phazon Mines was
the toughest moment in either game for me...

If you liked Prime, you'll probably like this, I can't see
how you wouldn't, since it improves everything. The
Sanctuary Temple is definitely the neatest thing in either
game, beautiful art direction... and I like the darker
story, which I personally like. You come across a million
corpses just minutes into the game. It's a really fucked up
planet.

I guess the only real dispointment was the ''deadly
atmosphere'' you mentioned... yeah, it does drain your
health pretty quick, but there's safe zones that are way too
plentiful. And they TOTALLY recharge your health if you wait
long enough. And eventually you find a suit that protects
against most of the damage the atmosphere does to you. And I
though there'd be some really tough moments where you had to
traverse a huge area with NO safe zones, try to cheat death
in a panic before you fry, but no... it's pretty easy.
Probably a lot more dangerous on hard more though, which
I'll try after I beat the game.

By the end of the game, I find it's safer to be in the dark
world than the light, since you can use those safety zones
to recharge fully at any time.

Sanctuary FORTRESS, I meant. Neat place, even the bugs on
the walls are mechanical.

Dark Samus is pretty cool, too. Some nice battles.

Thanks for the feedback. :)
I'll probably end up buying the game anyway. It comes out
this week already it seems. But I want to finish Paper Mario
2 first, before i buy another game (brilliant & hilarious
game btw.)

I can't say I'm really looking forward to tougher
bossfights. Sounds like I'll be stuck there a couple of
times... trying over and over. Oh well

"The battles have a bit more twitch action, and less
gimmicky strategy
"

That's a shame really. I like the gimmicky strategy-battles.
At first having no idea what to do and how to hurt such a
boss... but once you figure out his weak spot it suddenly
becomes lots of fun as you can easily kill it. Nice and
creative, they always give me a good feeling once I've
figured them out. I guess "twitch action" means they just
fight really aggressive and you have to hurt them alot?

"But the gauntlet of Space Pirates in the Phazon Mines
was the toughest moment in either game for me...
"

Wait... so you're saying the hardest part of the Phazon
Mines was harder than anything found in Echoes as well? In
other words... I've already seen the toughest the series can
offer? :) Well I'll probably be alright then I think. The
Phazon Mines were no picknick... but I did survive
it... eventually. I was afraid Echoes was going to be even
more difficult in places.

"which I personally like. You come across a million
corpses just minutes into the game. It's a really fucked up

planet.
"

Sounds excellent! I've always liked the darker side of the
Metroid series. I loved the introduction-level of Prime...
aboard the Space Station with all the dead space pirates. It
really creates the right mood. "What the hell caused all
this?"

"but there's safe zones that are way too plentiful. And
they TOTALLY recharge your health if you wait long
enough.
"

That's relieving too. So there aren't really any points in
the game where you get into serious trouble for being out in
the dark atmosphere too long? I'm sorry to hear you were
dissapointed by it... but to me this is good news. ;) I'll
probably be able to finish Echoes after all.

"Probably a lot more dangerous on hard more though, which
I'll try after I beat the game.
"

Needless to say, I'm not even touching Hard Mode. Nor will i
be doing any low-item runs, or trying to finish the game as
fast as possible. I love playing around like that in Super
Metroid... but not in FPS-metroids. I'll just play through
it in normal once, maybe twice.

I really just like to enjoy the story and soak up the
atmosphere. I took Prime very slow, and I scanned
everything. I thought it was especially well done
once the pirates started to take notice of you, and you
started to find messages about yourself in their computers.
:D

"Sanctuary FORTRESS, I meant. Neat place, even the bugs
on the walls are mechanical.
"

Well... I don't really know what you're talking about yet.
But I'm looking forward to exploring the fortress myself.
Mechanical bugs?

"Dark Samus is pretty cool, too. Some nice battles."

Hm... i don't know. I'll have to see for myself. Ofcourse
I've read about dark samus... but it seems a bit like a
Fusion rip-off to me. Atleast in Fusion it was really a big
part of the story. But from what I've seen of Echoes, the
story seems so messy. Like they're trying to do too many
things. A light and a dark world, ing and luminoth. And
space pirates. And Metroids. And a dark samus. Are they
really able to tie all those things together in a nice
coherent storyline?

offline Ophecks from Nova Scotia (Canada) on 2004-11-21 19:44 [#01402131]
Points: 19190 Status: Moderator | Show recordbag

Don't worry, you'll still have to figure out tricky ways to
hurt the bosses. I died without taking a nanometer of health
away from one of them before figuring out the trick. But
they seem a bit more aggressive, even knowing ''the trick'',
they're a bit harder. They go down swinging.

And don't worry about the storyline... I think most people
are plenty satisfied with it. Dark Samus is pretty effective
and intimidating. And I think the scanning is a bit more
interesting, too... basically, there's more to scan, and the
benefit of having all these elements in the story is that
you see them all come together and tie-in through your
research. It's not as complex as it sounds, it'll make
perfect senese very quickly. And you'll still get into the
minds of Space Pirates... this time, they're extremely
unhappy and scared to see TWO Samus' running around, but...
well you'll see what happens.

Well, I have the game now... so far so good. The first part,
the introduction, was awesome! That really freaked me out
because I didn't see it coming at all. :p Who needs resident
evil if you've got metroid? The darker mood and atmosphere
work really well for me.

But I just came back from my first trip through the dark
world... and thought it was kind of annoying. Your energy
depletes alot faster than I had thought. I spent most of
time just standing still in one of those bubbles waiting for
my energy to regenerate. :-/ I can't wait to find the suit
that'll help against the atmosphere.

Otherwise, I haven't found anything insanely difficult
yet... so we'll see how it goes. I hope I'll make it to the
end of the game without too much frustration...

I never did manage to beat the last boss in Metroid Prime,
which was made all the more disappointing when I decided to
check out the speed runs and watched a guy beat the game
with almost full health (not to mention the 100% completion
and about 1 hour of total playing time)

Anyway, I decided to pick up Echoes yesterday and it's been
really fun so far. It's challenging but not so bad that I
want to stop playing. I suspect it'll get harder but
hopefully I'll be able to beat this one.

I like the new scan visor a lot more. It's so much easier to
tell what you have and haven't scanned so you don't spend 5
minutes in a room clicking L until nothing appears to need
scanning anymore.

I've heard that this one takes about 20 hours to beat the
first time, which is about how much time I spent on the
first, but it seems to me like it's a shorter game. This is
the only metroid game I can think of where you start with
(and get to keep) the morph ball, charge beam and by the
looks of it, the varia suit. What I hope that means is that
collecting those items would have added another hour or so
to the game play and that it's such a long game that doing
so would have made it too big.

Erm... who here has played Metroid Zero Mission via
emulator? I just got to Kraid, and, well... he's invisible.
And so am I. I see no mention of invisibility in the FAQs so
I'm thinking this may be an emulation error or something.

I'm using Visualboy Advance Special Edition and I'd like to
check with another emulator, but naturally I don't want to
waste an hour getting back here. Fuck that. I don't think I
can use this save with anything else. Fuck.

fortress electro fuck thing, the game seems to get allot
harder now.. wich is quite good as it has been pretty easy
so far.
I think im enjoying this game even more then i enjoyed
metroid prime, I cant come up with why i enjoy it more
though.

Btw the brinstar remix is awsome in torvus bog's water
environment, it sends those very special super metroid
chills down my spine!

OK, that was seriously fucked up. I had to disable a
background layer so I could see him. Maybe having some
problems with transparencies or something... weird. I think
I was also having problems with opaque water earlier...
guess I have to disable that layer when I get there again
too. What a pain. I'm sure you're all enthralled.

Awt- yeah, that fortress was tough. Those Rezbits are one of
the most annoying video game enemies in the history of video
game enemies.

The Sanctuary Fortress is an awesome artistic triumph.

i just came to the fortress, the environment is very
different and cool YES!

Im only around the save station in the beginning and have
allready realised how hard it's going to be, when trying to
enter the place those damn space pirates took about the half
of my energy (and that's quite unusuall for regular bad
guys)

You mentioned those mech bugs on the wall before, they are
great.. very "super metroid'ish"
Of some weird reason the fortress reminds me of the "dead
mechanical" place in super metroid.. cant remember it's
name, i think it lays sort of "behind" the ship.. you know
what i mean! the really weird horrible dead place around the
landing spot =)

anyway, i have never tryed out metroid on the game boys.. so
i cant help you there, would you recommend me that zero
mission thing ? is it top quality aswell ?

The Fortress is long and it is HARD (!!!). Enjoy. But it's
beautiful, hyper futuristic. Unforgettable environment, my
favorite place from either game.

The Metroids for Gameboy Advance are fantastic. Metroid
Fusion has the second best soundtrack in the series (behind
Super Metroid), but it's way too easy... you're guided
through the game, given objectives and directions, and never
really get that ''lost and alone'' feel. Still very fun
though, but the least ''Metroidy'' Metroid.

Zero Mission is sort of a remake/reimagination of the first
Metroid for NES, way better of course. Lots of good remixes
of every original Metroid theme, harder than Fusion and more
wide open... it's the most similar one to Super Metroid.

A bit too... ''colorful'', though. The GBA Metroids are
pretty cartoony and bright, which kind of gets on my nerves
sometimes. Super Metroid's a lot scarier and gloomier.

Both GBA Metroids are awesome.

And if you're into those 2D adventures, the GBA Castlevanias
are even better. They basically rip off the Metroid formula,
but
I like them even more. They're harder and deeper (!!!!!!!),
more RPG elements like building up your stats, equipping
weapons/armor/accessories, etc.

That was a wicked game, in my top 10 of 2004. But you have
to have scored at least a 9.3 at Gamespot to be worthy of
being namedropped in this topic.

so far, i'd say it's as good as the first one! : )

(i'm at the Torvus swamps right now, i don't know how much
worlds are there apart from the Temple grounds? i'm guessing
three... would have liked more)

the boss are hard indeed, and i'm just at the
beginning... i absolutely hate them until i beat them (or
get my brother to beat them... he only played the beginning
of Metroid Prime, like 4 hours, and i must be at 30 hours of
Metroid Prime including 1 and 2 but he's better than me at
beating bosses ' _ -)

the boss in dark torvus bog is kicking my shiny metallic ass
right now. i think i've figured it out, now i've just got
to find my way back. i left to go explore around & restore
my weapons, and got a wee bit lost.

this has got to be teh biggest game evar.

hmm. I haven't had much difficulty in this game yet. I had
my ass handed to me the first time I fought the boost ball
boss but that was because I thought the four pillars were
light crystals that had to be activated. It didn't occur to
me that the whole fight would be without the safe cover of
light.

Other than that, I've been doing fairly well in the game
which is good because I hate losing ^_^
I like a challenge but I don't like to die so many times
that I stop wanting to play the game anymore and so far,
echoes has offered exactly that. I do think the game is
getting harder quicker than I'm getting better, though. What
I mean is that when I started, the map never popped up
telling me where to go, but the last time I played, it had
to pop up twice telling me where to go next. I haven't been
figuring out the puzzles as quick as I should be.

hmmmmmmmmm

Fun though.

Just wait until you get to the sanctuary. The whole visual
feel of the game changes. It's amazing. Probably my favorite
level of any game I've played for a long time.

A lot of people are having problems with the Boost Boss. I
didn't . I gather that he's the toughest in the
game though. If you can take him, you can take anybody.
Don't give up. SHOPE HIM WHO'S BOSS

i finished the boost ball boss on the second shot, he was
kinda annoying though..

i had some problems with the spider ball boss too, hes
really easy if you know what to do and i did.
But in the last session of battling him (battling hmm) i
just missed a certain spot were i was forced to roll up to
be able to finish him, i simply couldnt see it =/ my
girlfriend then said "HEEy cant you bomb up there" and i
tryed it, and it worked haha.. so annoying just missing
something like that.. happens sometimes to me in metroid
prime, maybe i need glasses.
