i recently picked up an SL1200MK2 off ebay, that came with a ortofon cartridge. Its in great shape, i actually met the owner and i tried it out on the spot. When i got home i set it up and i was getting clear audio but only through one channel. the right. i checked the rca's and started getting pissed. on the last resort before packing this thing up and marching back over to this guys house i put my other tables needle in and it works fine. so does the ortofon needle need to be replaced? or is the whole thing shot? just curious |

One of the cables located under the headshell may have worked its way loose. If it works with another cart then the turntable is fine. The stylus may need replacing if it is old, these dont cost much. |

yea 50 bucks or so, off to guitar center i go... i thought it was one of the rca's so i spent 1/2 the night double checking connections, making sure the sodder points weren't broken. etc. i think the stylus is old as sin so, that's probably my problem. can i use an eliptical needle in a cart made for a spherical needle? |

No problem :) Some carts can take different styli, you will have to check with the shop or manufacturer. Take the headshell with you. When you fit a new one make sure it is balanced correctly, both weight wise and the angle, some manufacturers give away a guide to put on the platter whilst you set them up. this is important as it can be another cause of signal loss and excess record wear. Good luck getting it sorted. |

you can also try to clean the contact spots on your cartridge (those 4 studs that's located on the rear). use some isopropanol or a similar cleaning fluid, that might do the trick. i have experienced the same situation as you have with my concordes, and it's no biggie. |

i actually bought a new cart (DJ pro orfoton), but when i go into the shop at work i'm gonna try cleaning those contact points with some contact-cleaner. My new cart is working very well, it'd be nice if i can get this cart in working order to have a pair orfoton's on deck. thank you for your suggestions and help guys. |

another question for you guys if you could help me out. My table didn't come with instructions since it was used. The guy i won this bid from gave me a few parts that came with the deck. I know what most of the parts do...the 45 adaptor, the weight that goes on the back of the tone arm, but then i got this flat piece of metal that has to be the size of a chicklet, and this long white plastic piece. the bottom if flat and theres a spot molded at the top of it that looks like a place for a rod or tone arm? what the hell are these for? i asked the seller but he said he's never used them before and doesn't know either... |

the white plastic piece is used to allign cartridges that is mounted on a headshell. the needle is supposed to be in line with some marking on it to be correctly mounted. i do not have mine available at the time, but i have used it when i rocked stanton 680s (before i got my ortofons). i do not know what the other thing is. i hope this was helpful |

yea so i cleaned the contacts on the back and no dice. it doesn't clear up the problem i might just send it back to ortofon. I dunno what to do with it |

looks like you figured out your problem sort of?? but just to chime in... another cleaning trick is to use an eraser from a pencil but too much of that will wear out the contacts. for you brits, an eraser is a rubber! |

yea, but not the kind thats on the end of a #2 pencil. i spoke to someone from Ortofon on the phone the other day and he said to use a stand alone eraser...still it doesn't work. oh well. |
