this is so terrible. i saw coil live a few weeks ago and
thought he was amazing... he had so much more to live for.
the site says he died in an accident whilst drunk.

i'll really miss him for a long time and i'm sure a hell of
a lot of people will feel the same way. excuse me if
there's a thread about this already - but this should be on
the front page anyway.

at least he influenced a lot of people in his life and will
continue to do so posthumously i'm sure.

Sucks that it was an accident while drunk... his old demon

isn't a bit ironic that someone called "Balance" should die

Paul, it wasn't a traffic accident. He fell from a first
floor balcony about 15 feet, while drunk. Cracked his head
but didn't die immediately. Was taken to hospital and died
without regaining consciousness.

Horrible... I couldn't believe this when I heard it, and it
still seems... questionable, heh. A really horrible way to
go, but at least he left behind a nice big body of work to
sift through and enjoy. I'm going to go on a Coil spree this
evening.

I never really got into coil. What are they like? What
albums should I check out?

From what Ive heard were the Nine inch nails remixes and
like a few misc mp3s that I wasnt very impressed with.

I'm sure they are great because if they werent no one would
care about them. What albums should I keep an eye out for in
next time I'm buying music?

Good read, thanks.

Fungusman- they were, like, everything. Personally I'm
fondest of their more industrial/gothy work, particularly
the early stuff. Horse Rotorvator and Scatology are my
favorites, quite easy to into, but still demented. And
there's lots of great dark ambient/avant garde... Black
Light District has some nice soundscapes.

Try Ostia (The Death of Pasolini), that should win you over.
Beautiful track.

I like their classic industrial works.
I like their electronic works (especially try to find the
"Backwards" demo tape for a prime example, sadly never
released. Very unique sound to it.)
I like their later drone works. Constant shallowness leads
to evil is great.

i'd say start with Musick To Play In The Dark, vol.1
(although some people disagree and say to start with Love's
Secret Domain).

the 'Amethyst Deceivers' EP is awesome.

the most accessible would be their early albums, Scatology
and Horse Rotorvator, but they're not very representative,
especially for later Coil which is much more "special"...
also, they have great tracks but filler tracks too, which
isn't so much the case of later Coil.
