Canada's Dark Secret

Saw a documentary today about the Innu people of Canada
called "The Innu: Surviving Canada" and was pretty shocked.
My government is doing shit for these people and just don't
give a fuck. Pretty shameful
Wikipedia will explain it better than I can

yeah, actually i remember seeing this one picture of a bunch
of young innu children huffing gas in plastic bags... i cut
it out of the paper and kept it for a long time, cause i
thought it was really striking... very sad stuff... why do i
get the feeling that there are pretty big fucking barriers
in front of us getting this problem fixed (bureaucratically
speaking)?

The government's position is basically "it's their fault".
The necessary infrastructure to remedy the situation is
simply not provided by the government. No rehab centres, no
adequate hospitals, no courthouses, no safehouses for abused
women.

The catholic church promised them way back that they would
provide them with a better life if they settled down. They
got substandard housing with no running water when they
started out and there were many reports of sexual abuse of
Innu children by Catholic priests. Its disgusting.

how come? (it's my city of birth and i get a little
sensitive sometimes i guess... but it's been a while since
i've lived there and so i'm always curious to hear people's
impressions of it)

CTV has shown huffing footage before.
But I mean really, it's a problem that has existed since
before I was born, and there's nothing really that we can do
about it. They don't want our help.

that's what happens when you decimate an entire culture and
leave a tenth of them in complete culture shock and complete
hopelessness.

They're most certainly in some form of culture shock, but
the only real solution is to just wait for them to integrate
with regular society.
In order for that to happen, the government is going to have
to stop being racist.

I totally disagree and will just repeat my second post
"No rehab centres, no adequate hospitals, no courthouses, no
safehouses for abused women. "

Plus on the documentary the Innu leaders said repeatedly
that they are asking for these facilities and don't recieve
them.
