i love them...it's even better than the previous band (at
the drive in).
lotsa progressive sounds in it + the vocalist is way better
in singig here...way obvious that he's mature.

Combining this trademark blend of emotional melodies and
upbeat rhythm going at an unpredictable rate, At the
Drive-In definitely stuck out of their hometown El Paso, TX.
Formed in early 1994, it wasn't long after their first EP,
Hell Paso, debuted, followed by a brief tour across the Lone
Star State. With the secure line up including Cedric
(vocals), Omar, Jim (guitar), Pall (bass) and Tony (drums),
ATDI continued on with a second EP entitled Alfaro Vive,
Carajo with a full-fledged tour of playing empty houses and
clubs across the Western United States. A small gig in Los
Angeles -- with an audience only consisting of nine people
-- immediately got them the attention from Flipside Records,
who put out their full-length "Acrobatic Tenement" in 1996.
With their constant energy and a stubborn enthuasism of
continuing on, an audience started to develop courtesy of
constant touring and word of mouth hype. Their 1997
follow-up EP "El Gran Orgo" was released with more of a
melodic bite, but their musical depth and originally still
remained. In Casino Out followed up in 1998, and 2000 saw
the release of Relationship of Command. The band went on
indefinite hiatus in 2001. Cedric and Omar created Mars
Volta while Jim, Tony and Paul formed Sparta.

Saw them earlier this year, they sounded terrible.

I do like De-Loused though.

Deloused In The Comatorium is a brilliant album.

Their next album is called Frances The Mute but I don't
think they even really made the album yet so I'm not quite
sure why they've titled it.

A friend of mine just gave me this CD. and from the moment I
hit play I was blown away. Incredible music...The singer
has a bit of a genderless voice at certain parts of the
songs

they are SCARY live

literally scary. 45 minute versions of drunkship and
cicatriz. when i saw them live, a guitar launched by omar
missed my friend's head by mere inches.

Omar Rodriguez is probably really rich. He took this
interview over his cell phone while he was bicycling around
Studio City in the middle of the daysounds pretty
fancy. Then again, maybe hes not. I was asleep until
he called ---- thats pretty fancy too.

Marco Schlesinger: Hey I cant hear you.
Omar Rodriguez: Wait theres a truck passing by.
M: Where are you?
O: Studio City.
M: Is there anything that you would like to add, other than
the statement on your website, regarding the recent death of
your band mare Jeremy Ward??
O: Uh-----hmm.
M: Ok, never mind. We dont have to talk about that
if your uncomfortable. What are you doing?
O: Im out on a bike ride.
M: Is that how you keep so skinny? Bike rides?
O: No, I just got a crazy metabolism.
M: Ever try any protein shakes or weight gainers from GNC?
O: Actually I did, When I was younger I tried all that
stuff. Im happy with how I am now. Im just skinny.
M: Girls go crazy for you guys. Whats up with that?
O: Really?
M: Yeah, you guys are total chick magnets.
O: (laughs) I was totally unaware of that. Thats so
weird, because in high school
none of us got that. Usually its guys coming up to
ask how I got a certain guitar sound, stuff like that.
M: The record is good. When does your tour start?
O: We have a show here at the Henry Fonda theater,
Thats the first show of the tour. Then we go to
Frisco and then overseas to Europe, Australia, and Japan.
M: Thats nice. Tell me about the fro . How long have
you been growing it?
O: Since 1998. I go through weird phases where Ill
shave my head and then let it all grow out again.
M: Are you trying to attract more of a skinhead following
when you do that?
O: (chuckles) No!
M: Cmon dude, Prog Oi.
O: (laughs) Oh.
M: Yeah, because I think the street punk/OI scene is getting
kinda stale. You guys really need to take it to the next
level.
O: God dont do this to me. Are you one of tho

Are you one of those guys?
M: Yup, Im a meaty skinhead.
O: (silence)

M: Im kidding, far from it actually...
O: Oh, OK.
M: Youre producing Radio Vagos record.
O: Yeah, they are on hiatus right now so were taking
a break from that.
M: How did that come about?
O: They asked me to do and I said I would only if they were
willing to work under heavy criticism and were open to
reworking parts of songs.
M: Are you recording/producing anything else right now?
O: No, just their and our stuff.
M: Whats up with those crazy lyrics? Thats
some WILD STYLE!
O: Yeah, Cedric and Jeremy would get together and write the
lyrics. Jeremy wrote quite a bit of them. Wed all
sit around and play with words and phrases going back and
forth, thats how the the lyrics came about.
M: How about the music?
O: I write everything, the music.
M: So why do you need Cedric then? Hes just the
pretty boy up front dancing and shit, basking in the
glory....
O: (Laughs) No, Its not like that. Cedric actually
plays all instruments.
M: What?
O: Yeah, Ill write a bass line and teach it to him.
While he plays that ill try to come up with a guitar
arrangement.
M: OK then, whats up with all the lineup changes?
O: It takes a while to get comfortable with playing with
certain people. A lot of the former musicians in the band
were really great technically and could play what ever you
asked them to but they had nothing interesting to say.
Its part of being in a band thats still
growing. In AT THE DRIVE IN we went thru 13 different
drummers before we settled with the one that everyone know
knows.
M: You are something of an entrepreneur. Tell me about your
partnership with GSL?
O: (Laughs) Ive known Sunny since `93. I moves to
Long Beach and we started hangin out a lot. Even
back then I was contributing to the label, as far as art
work and ideas and things like that. We used to have this
warehouse in Long beach

It was kinda like an Art Center. Defacto recorded there, it
was great, but he takes care of all the day-to-day stuff.
Ill help him with the releases and scheduling them,
how much we should spend on a project, etc. He takes care of
everything though. It comes down to me just having to return
phone calls to him, which Im always on top of.
M: Lets go back to the `fros, cuz somuch is
made of that.
O: Yeah, I dont get it. I just have long hair and
its curly!
M: But every time I read something about the MARS VOLTA they
mention the hair and AT THE DRIVE IN, especially in the
foreign press like in the U.K.... Does that bug you??
O: Yeah the British press... its lazy journalism.
Theyre like tabloids.
M: So your not going to tell me about the hair product you
use? Activator? Soul Glo?
O: No none of that
M: Because im writing this for NME (top British music
weekly)
O: Oh God! I hope your not going to use this in the
interview.
M: I heard youre vegan.

O: Yeah, I really dont like titles though. I
dont ear animal products.
M: How bout leather shoes or belts?
O: NO! Im just a hippy.
M: Wha?!
O: Yeah, I just like being outdoors in nature. I never wash
my hair. I do once every six months and I dont take
very many showers. Im happy with who I am and it
took me a long time to realize that. I spent years trying to
assimilate when my family moved from Puerto Rico to El Paso,
Texas. I would shave my head or bleach my hair and dye it
green, anything to look like the other kids. I didnt
like anything about myself when I was younger. I went off
and lived in a canyon for months. When I got out I realized
that Im proud of who I am. Im not a
musician. Im just me.
M: So since youre a hippy, how often do you
shrooms?
O: (Laughs) No nothing like that. I just like being
outside.
M: No Playstation 2 for you then.
O: No.
M: Do you ever go back home and visit?
O: Yeah, I was j

O: Yeah, I was just in Juarez. I go back to Puerto Rico
every now and then and help my uncle on the farm, picking
mangos, making coconut milk. My mom and dad are moving back
there.

There publicist (who is a very lovely woman) now interrupts
the conversation to inform us that Omar has another
interview in a few minutes.

M: OK, Very nice, sounds like you gotta go.
O: Yeah, do we know each other?
M: No. Have a nice time talking on the phone.
O: (Laughs) Alright, th

Deloused In The Comatorium is one of my fav album's right
now.

I saw them live last year at Glasgow Barrowlands and they
were terrible, i was gutted because i love their album so
much, they were so fuckin self indulgent, and only played
about 4 tracks off the album, each song lasting about 15-20
mins each, with pointless solo's and noise, alot of people
were angry at that gig
