you only get NAT errors if you're using a router, right?

i guess so.

i think it's because i use a shithole dsl
modem/switch/router/firewall thing... and, i can't figure
out how to turn the motherfucking firewall off on it.

i also have a wireless router connected behind the dsl
modem. that's the firewall i'd like to use.

ruters have a problem with bittorrent due to the number of
requests that come in while you are running it, it causes a
lot of routers to crash. The only real solutions are to
either put up with the crashes/shitty speeds, or put the
bittorrent machine in a DMZ outside of NAT.

Another option is to use a modern client which supports
upnp, allowing bittorrent to communicate with your router
and automagically open the ports it needs. Bittornado and
azureus on windows both do this, and azureus on linux does
it as well.

Your router needs to be sufficiently modern to have upnp,
and most have an option to enable/disable it..

It's not just that though, portforwarding shouldn't be that
much of a problem. It's the amount and frequency of packets
hitting the router, it can overload them when using NAT
(because obviously it has to route the information
internally).

holy crappin shit, i got it!

i put my router in the DMZ of my dsl modem. and in the setup
for my wireless router i forwarded port 6881 (both TCP and
UDP) to my machine.

wierd timing this thread. i've been fucking with it all
evening.

Hello mr. green smilie!!!

i'd been trying that for a while, i just had the router's IP
address wrong.

Bittorrent doesn't use UDP so that shouldn't be effecting
it.

Two things:
1) my suggestion is a better solution, because if you ever
use some tweaked client with different ports, it will
automagically work (if that thinger is supported)
2) IIRC bt by default wants 6881-6889, and many clients need
6881-6899, so get those in the forwarding as well.

hmm... i've got a setting (checkbox) in Configuration >
Server
entitled "Enable UDP tracker client protocol.
This uses the same port number as the TCP server".

it was checked by default.

hmm... my router has UPnP enabled by default, and Azureus
was still having nat issues.

nice.

now forwarding ports 2234 and 5534 allowed me to actually
browse people's folders on soulseek too!

do i need to open both TCP and UDP for soulseek?

Nah, you'll saturate your internet circuit before your
internal switch/router.

the IP of my wireless router.

What the fuck are you typing about? I actually meant the
number of open sessions that bittorrent creates can saturate
the NAT table which causes the router to crash.

Get Bit Tornado...best torrent program out IMO. Just make
sure your Upload/Download Rate are proportional to one
another....basically d/l it and everything that is set at
default will work. Also, if your using Windows 2000 or XP
be sure to disable the internal firewall or it will cause
Bit Tornado to run MUCH slower.
