THE APHEX EFFECT

RDJ has bought a ton of stuff this year from people on the
Analogue Heaven mailing list.

My mate sold him some Korg MS boxes. Hopefully
he's done with software 'bullshit' and is going to make some
more good records.

The good news about this speaks for itself. The bad news,
it's only available as 180g Audiophile vinyl, which means
that the sound quality should be fantastic, but it will
probably also be expensive. And for only two tracks too.
It's also packaged in a binder which will also hold future
editions of the Analord series. As nice as the idea sounds,
it'd be nice to get them all put together on one CD,
wouldn't it? The unfortunate thing about Aphex Twin is that
he's gotten quite good at making money lately but he's also
talented enough to get away with it. So depending on how
much he's looking for for this result (the line "Price:
t.b.a." seems like a bad sign to me), I'll probably end up
springing for it anyway. Of course there's also a bit of
debate over the title "Analord." Despite the fact that it's
also the name of a Wagon Christ track, is it a reference to
the fact that these tracks may be refined versions of the
back catalogue of his old analog work? Or is it... well I'll
leave it your imagination. Considering this is Aphex Twin,
I'm going to guess that it's a little of both.

Indeed! I'd also add that it's nice to see that James is now
free to use his beautiful Aphex logo wherever he darned well
pleases since freeing himself from his Warp contract. You
all know by now how much I got the impression some time ago
that James wasn't happy there, so it's best that he does his
own thing now. "Analord' does indeed give out a coy
suggestion of 'analogue', which I find intriguing. But I
don't believe for one minute that James has reverted back to
his roots in soldering irons and voltage control. Once
you've made the move to software, there's really no going
back.

some mag wanted to interview him around the time of ICBYD

he got an effects pedal and put it in a cardboard box with
the leads coming out the side, and claimed it was a
'custom-built-effect'

that's where this nonsense started.

him/his music.

I like him cause his music is good. His close friends have
claimed his home built stuff is bullshit.

what is that MP3: AFX 6 bit on that site? is it supposed to
be a link? it mentions this wicked mp3 then doesn't have
it!!

p.s. that photo looks cool, but who cares if he makes his
own stuff/ mods stuff or not. its the end result that
matters. I think anyone who has done diy wouldnt take it on
stage especially with wires hanging out of it, it would be
too easy for it to stop working.

that's what i was thinking.

i'd imagine ricky jimjams has done some circuit bending on
gear; but definitely not to the level ae have taken it to
with their sh101s and whatnot.

I read a bit about the technique used in your avatar. It's
cool, like that old afx microsite. WORD.

I must admit, when I was younger and really into aphex, the
'makes his own gear' thing made it a little more sweeter.
Like every sound I heard was liquid gold from his secial
machines. At the time it was thrilling..People on the AH
mailing list build stuff all the time and most of their
music is awful. Or just sound like unfocused experiments.
Richard has been MY Nirvana. He changed everything for me.,

I AM NOT TALKING ABOUT HARDWARE HERE BUT:
the only ones that truly make "homemade" stuff are the yound
chaps from autechre, you can hear it in every sound, now i
am not saying that this makes them any the bit better but,
they give a unique sound to everyone of their sounds,
they take it above the acid, braindance or dnb influence,
afx does this too but he puts more influence into the track,
for instance this analord stuff, just by name and hype will
be analogue, meaning it will have an acid influence, you
would never see autechre doing this.

autechre ciruit bend. They aren't building modulars and
stuff.. Just tweaking stuff.
