why do people in general like so much the bass sound? because it reminds of a heart beating, maybe something you hear in the womb or...?
what makes some people appear sexy to other people, why do most men find breasts attractive, or particular kinds of hair or eyes or....? is it for the gene pool diversity, breast-feeding for children or...?
(whimsical and unlikely answers are welcome as well)

I think boobs are just a curiosity. Just look objectively; they are weird. (period) And besides being weird they are squishy and bouncy - People like squishy and bouncy things. Though the reason for this could very well be because boobs are squishy and bouncy and we are just subconsciously thinking whatever is squishy and bouncy is a boob.
squishy and bouncy boobies are just so...squishy...AND BOUNCY

I've noticed that bass waveforms are longer and slower than sounds at higher pitches. So yes, its possible that humans just notice bass more because its easier to hear (doesn't zoom by as fast [although it can, if you program it right]), but I've also noticed that most ambient tracks tend to stay in the lower ranges as well... it tends to have some sort of relaxing/unpiercing affect, however people always take things to extremes and like to turn up those lower tones that they love so much to completely absorb themselves in it.

funny that the bass player is usually the least appreciated member of a rock band.

I heard somewhere that low frequencies subliminally remind us of past dangers (earthquakes, stampedes, volcanoes etc). Something to do with our evolution, i guess.
Bass: Thrilling on a Neolithic Level.

Yes I have also read that...and the reason it is supposed to be so popular with males is because as a result of this subliminal reference males naturally start feeling and become more agressive when listening to bass heavy choons. Which obviously gives them a buzz and a hard on.

I like the little rumble in my throat that loud bass gives. And I like the percussive nature of it. I always keep my subwoofer close to me so I can really feel it. And I certainly wouldn't be surprised if ''subliminal aggression'' theory was right. You definitely want something with some boom when you're teeming with adrenaline.
For me, I mostly treat it like a sort of pillar/support device. I like when basslines are walking around a track, accentuating both the beat and the melody at the same time. During instrumental buildups when the bass isn't there, or it's just waiting to jump in, I really notice its absence.
