I've tried a violin... I managed to figure out how the scale goes and where the fingers had to be, but nothing more.
otherwise I play piano-ish things, didjeridoo, mouthharp, a tad guitar (who doesn't), bass (easy), and anything I can get my hands on.

yeah, I think you really NEED lessons for violin.
it's not a "tempered" instrument, so you can play in tune, but not on key without knowing it.

I knew this guy who played violin. He wasn't the brightest, or most tallented guy. He taught himself. He had been doing it for a couple years, and he was competent enough on his own. He was just persistent.
If you want my advice, save the money. Learning violin on your own, with some patience from yourself, and a lot of patience from your friends and family, can be accomplished. If they complain, just tell them to feel lucky that you are not learning the theremin.

if you are going to teach yourself, you'll need a reference whenever you play. You need to be on key.

I studied violin for five years, but had to quit the music school; my violin was crashed in a crowded bus then. I haven't had violin in my hands since that and now I'm not a violin player.. I play piano (but my technique is shit). I'm lucky that i still can sing.

i just want to learn more on how to read sheet music. anyone know any good sites?
i think violin is one of the most avante guarde (sp?) instruments out there to create your own music with, which is why i don't understand why it's so damn hard to learn.
it's getting a bit frusterating i guess.

if you want to stay in tune playing the violin without having lessons will be HARD. i think it's possible but if you don't want to take any lessons i suggest you try out the guitar or the piano..

I've been playing Guitar for 5 years and I just recently got an Alto Saxophone, but it is hard to practice when your mom is the biggest music nazi around.
Anyway, I think you should definitly take lessons. I think it's important that your tutor challenges you and asks you a lot of questions on theory too, that way you'll become a lot more musical as well as advancing on your principal instrument, Good luck.

I've played guitar for about 6-7 years, but I'm not particularly passionate about it anymore... occasionally I do sit down with it, but my skills seem to have stopped evolving. I always play the same riffs or solos when I pick it up and fuck around. It's still fun to jam along with some open-ended blues rock or whatever, but I'm not learning much anymore, not getting much better. It's my fault.

don't get frustrated too easily, i've been leraning piano for half a year now and of course i'm still a bloody beginner. sometimes it's really a pain and things go backwards even (that's when your ears get better). violin is an awsome instrument but it's harder to start with i guess, you have to learn more in the beginning.
i have some programs for learning the sheet music thing, its quite tough, for example 'piano professor'.
oh.. and you need lessons. you'd not believe how many mistakes you make in rythm and intonation without even noticing. also, he can help you with many little tricks when learning. first thing i noticed was that my ears improved. you also need backup and someone who tells you that you actually improve. but it's a really long way i guess
