depending on which layer of abstraction you choose (from
most to least)

zampano, johnny truant, mark z. danielewski

(really written by mark z. danielewski, though)

the amazon reviews might give you a flavour of what it's
about.

This review is a bit pitchfork but it's good
nonetheless.

it's the most disorientating thing i've ever read... it's
almost like a novel and a critique of the art of criticism
at the same time, if that makes sense (i guess it won't
until you read the book).

and like i said, very, very scary too. the scariest thing
about it is how blank and impersonal the scariness of it all
is.

that second link kinda gives you an impression of the
emptiness that the book is about that's so fucking
frightening.

it's the sort of book where self-reference is almost
necessary or essential when describing it, because i've
never really read anything like it.

it's like thomas pynchon writing a lovecraft novel that's
edited by william burroughs or some such shit.

i'm in about the same spot as you... the tapes filmed by the
guy who went crazy (i've also skipped ahead to the letters
from truant's mother, which were fucked). i've actually had
to put this book down and not read any more at certain
points... the last time i had to do that was with wilson's
illuminatus! trilogy

i've just come across this interview, which describes the
book far better than any review i've read so far.

this is a typical page from chapter 9 :)

actually in that interview he mentions emily dickinson as an
influence. i'd not considered it before, but that is totally
fucking spot on.

his stuff has the same surreal (from "because i could not
stop for death")... 'we passed the alien corn/or rather it
passed us' feel to it that emily's best poems do :)

akshually, he doesn't mention her as an influence, just to
give an example, akshually.

yeah, but i found it very apt nevertheless, and i'd never
considered it before.

i used to love emily's stuff when i studied it in school

I really made fun of her when we had to critique her poems
in school. Well, that's what I always did with poetry since
I thought it was such wank.

most poetry is wank

i really liked a few poets all the same though... eliot,
dickinson, hopkins (hopkins... lol consumed by catholic
guilt, makes great reading as a result)

fuck the 'metaphysical' poets though, at least the poets eng
lit has labelled as metaphysical... donne etc.

poetry is only beautiful to the person who wrote it.

all this bullshit about poetry.

there is absolutely great poetry to be found, but you have
to go out and look for it, as with any discipline in the
arts.

just like you didn't just keep listening to Billboard-music
and went out to hear something different, you can easily do
the same for poetry.

"poetry is only beautiful to the person who wrote
it."

that's just essence of wank.
