 i have a mate who has a virus on his pc or at least im  pretty sure it is
 
  everytime he logs onto xp under any username the pc logs out  and shuts down

its hard to say what it is, but it sounds similar to  W32/Blaster-A.  If it has any of these descriptions  http://www.sophos.com/virusinfo/analyses/w32blastera.html
 
  then there you go.
  Also, if warning of shutdown does come up, just type the  command in dos prompt: shutdown -a then work on it.

If he's got time between shutdowns, tell him to type in  services.msc in the run command, then pick Remote Procedure  Call and disable it. His computer will stay on forever and  ever amen. Then it's just a matter of using a virus removal  tool whenever.
