Skidoos feels like getting out of a swimming pool on a hot
night and drinking a cold frosty one.

tetra sync is a masterpiece, im fond of steinbolt, but no
where on the level of tetra....

Tetra is to Ultravisitor as Mt Saint Michaels is to DrukQs
in my opinion.

skidoos, from akufen, is certainly amazing on the bass
levels....especially right when it hits in :D : D:D

I feel overall Mt Saint Michaels is the top track,.

But the horns at the end of VordhosbN certainly are my most
fav. part on the whole album....I just feel altogether Mt.
S. Mich. is the truest track on the album, overall.

the horns at the end of vordhosbn are out of this world....

I love the whole thing. There is a constant tension; voices
in odd ranges, melodies twitching about; everything
supremely crafted and paced, and an overall structure to
boot. The fact that his brain could envision a way to bind
such diametrically opposing samples is rather intimidating.

well, if we're talkin drukqs, theres no question in my mind
that Mt Saint Michaels is the best track on the album.
besides petatil cx htdui, but the two aren't exactly
comparable.

"take time"!?

are you insane?!?

I really dislike that track. I hate that melody they're
singing it in.

I did have it simply with the first track. it almost made me
puke and cry at the same time. which isn't always good but
in this case it was.

"velouria"!?

are you insane?!?

well, okay, it is a great track.. but something like
"gigantic" or "broken face" must hit in more on first
listen. I guess you heard "bossanova" earlier than the other
albums. if not - you are truly insane.

mt sait michael, is my least fav off of drukqs, i like the
ending but only because if you turn it up loud enough, its
like being on a cool drug, but it sounds dated. afx picked
this one up dusted it off, remixed it, stuck on the cool
ending, and put it on the album.

offline mrgypsum on 2004-09-12 21:59 [#01333287]

its got better music on it than the others, surfer is raw
and powerful but that wears off, doolittle ehh too poppy,
trompe is good but missing something, bossanova has it all,
its the raw, and poppy, and has something else, its called
pixies magic.

offline zaphod from the metaverse on 2004-09-12 21:59 [#01333288]
Points: 4428 Status: Addict

surfer rosa is a dated one, raw, but they've made much much
better music since. sure, its got gigantic, river euphrates,
where is my mind, two of which were rerecorded to much
better effect.
its just a warm up for doolittle, which is just a warm up
for when they actually got good with bossanova.

runs from thread.

bossanova is an overproduced '80s-sounding album that lacks
all of the frenetic energy from both "surfer rosa" and
"doolittle".

and the lyrics start to go shit.

it's the pixies pop-album.

"bossanova" is FAR, so very VERY FAR from raw.

offline zaphod from the metaverse on 2004-09-12 22:02 [#01333294]
Points: 4428 Status: Addict

yeah, it is far from raw, but its melodic, has better
overall songs, and the band has improved massively as
musicians.
plus its got the happening, which is the best song they've
done.

80s? wheres the synth pop stuff, over produced?? just
because they stopped sounding like a garage band doent mean
its overproduced.

Are you insane? It's the most thematically coherent song on
the album - the vocal samples are perfect, I love the take
time / tick tock pun, I love the contrast between the life
affirmingness of the song and the bleak Ecclesiastes
quotes.

But you do not care for sweet fruit unless it contains worms
and razors.

it does not have better overall songs. it has a few really
great ones and a few really mediocre ones - there may have
been mediocre songs on previous albums, but not in this
quantity.

and I hate "the happening". boring, endless song!!

listen to the first track, obviously not as raw as the
others but its got some to give

what the fuck do I care about how "thematically coherent"
songs are? I do not sit around listening to music, thinking
to myself "oh wow, this song has really got it's themes
right.."..

the melody is annoying, therefore I can't listen to it!

so keep your preconceptions of me for another day, Kevin,
thankyouverymuch!

But thematic coherence creates art that lasts and has depth.
It's like load-bearing infrastructure for meaning. That's
why Blade Runner is a classic - it takes two ideas -
perception and self - and explores them and their
relationship.

where did Blade Runner suddenly come from in a discussion
about music?

I really don't care about all of that bullshit, Kevin.
either I like it or I don't, I don't really care if it's
going to be relevant to the generations to come after
me.

I like something on my own merits, because of what I have
seen/heard/experienced up til then, because of how I feel
that day, not because of some kind of system I have created
in my head, using formulas like "thematic coherence = art
that lasts and has depth".
