this year's shortlist...

...looks like shit to me... there's probably less than ten
artists on the list who even put out decent albums... and so
much important stuff was missed... and honestly now... i
don't give a fuck about what the vast majority of this panel
listens to anyway... what the hell happened here?

shortlist

it's this annual list of albums that gets slowly wittled
down until one winner is given the prize... the albums are
nominated by musicians, and the albums cannot have sold more
than 500,000 units... Sigur Ros won in 2001, which was fine
and good... i can't recall who won in 2002, but i do know
that in 2003 Damien Rice did... which was a bit peculiar,
but whatever...

i've found eight albums from the list of nominees that i
condone:

Air "Talkie Walkie" (Astralwerks)
Belle & Sebastian "Dear Catastrophe Witness" (Sanctuary)
Blonde Redhead "Misery Is A Butterfly" (4AD/Beggars
Banquet)
Iron & Wine "Our Endless Numbered Days" (Sub Pop)
Magnetic Fields "I" (Nonesuch)
My Morning Jacket "It Still Moves" (ATO)
Wilco "A Ghost Is Born" (Nonesuch)
Wrens "Meadowlands" (Absolutely Kosher)

no way lists are fun... they might not mean anything, but at
least it's an opportunity for people to learn about stuff
that they might not otherwise... really this is just an
award, like the mercury prize or something...

i like some stuff on that list, but i don't know most of it
:(

a lot of it seems like anonymous throwaway type stuff to
me... there's definitely some good stuff there... i'm glad
to see that Jaylib got a mention, even though Shades of
Blue, King Gheedorah, Viktor Vaughn, and Madvillain did
not... which is shameful...

heh - i wonder if josh homme nominated his own band, the
eagles of death metal?

anyway, the only two records i know that i like on that list
are Melt Banana and Blonde Redhead. there's a couple of
good songs on the magnetic fields album, but it's not a very
noteworthy or interesting album, imo.

there's a whole lot of other really great records that came
out during that time period that didn't make the list that
are much more deserving of a prize. fantomas, skinny puppy,
neurosis, vsnares... just to name a few.

well to be fair, there are a few albums on there that I
probably would like that i haven't got the chance to hear
properly yet... but my three would be:

Blonde Redhead
Jaylib
Fiery Furnaces

i dunno for 2000

just because you disagree doesn't make it an invalid list...
but yeah, lists are stupid anyways...

lists r the best thing since sliced bread

its just that the music industry is so flooded these days,
and the lists r getting bigger and bigger, and then theyre
losing meaning

but this list is really shit

There's some good stuff on there. I didn't see British Sea
Power, which is strange considering it's a really great
album and it would fit in comfortably with the rest of the
stuff in that list.

Rufus Wainwright's new album has no place there, it's
average.
