googled, and also queryed this site, but i can't find any
refrences to lucas lifiting plot ideas from old kung fui
flicks and westerns. An old friend of mine was even able to
name the movie that yested lucas' claim to fame.

Anyone know of the movie i'm talking about?

I looked around a bit, somewhere it said he also cites Akira
Kurosawa's "Yojimbo"

yojimbo? that's a stretch... well, i guess if you really
think about it, star wars had the desert with light-sabres
and han solo had a gun... but i'm pretty sure that's as far
as it goes.

I know that he derived the term Jedi from the Japenese film
genre Jedi-Geki which means 'costume drama'

plus my film teacher said he has taken alot of other parts
from other films and genres but wasn't at liberty to say.

Coincidentally, I asked my roommate for a dvd to watch and
he gave me Akira Kurosawa's "Rashomon" which I just watched.

Akira Kurosawa was such a ground-breaker that every action/
adventure movie owes something to him........ he almost
defined the genre.........

lets face it, plot has never been the strongest part of this
type of movie........
"bad guys threaten village/ country/ planet/
universe......... good guys beat the shit out of bad guys
with sword/ gun/ light-sabre/ space ship"

throw in a love interest if you have to, a bit of humour and
there you have it!
