I know you will all be very interested to hear about my
most recently purchased DVDs:

Lost In La Mancha
All The Real Girls
Topsy-Turvy
Ratcatcher
Woman In The Dunes

I have only received Lost In La Mancha and Topsy-Turvy so
far. The others have yet to arrive.

Here are some short summaries:

Lost In La Mancha is a documentary about the making, and
failure, of the Terry Gilliam film The Man Who Killed Don
Quixote.

All The Real Girls is about a guy and a girl or whatever.
It's by David Gordon Green, who made the movie George
Washington.

Topsy-Turvy is a film about opera composers Gilbert and
Sullivan. Written and directed by Mike Leigh.

Ratcatcher is a film by Lynne Ramsay, who did Morvern
Callar. It's about a young boy in Glasgow in the late 70's.

Woman In The Dunes is a Japanese movie from 1964. It's about
a dude in the desert who gets trapped in a hole where a
woman is living and they get it on. Or something.

"ratcatcher" was on Dutch television yesterday. I had
already seen it - it's excellent.

"topsy-turvey" just finished on Dutch television.. already
have that one on dvd.. :P I must've seen it about 10 times
by now, I love that film.

most incredible thing about "topsy-turvey", I think, is that
Leigh made it the same way he makes his more
social-realistic drama's, through improvisation. they
must've done extensive research, but still..!

I was woken up at 4.10am by some guy outside screaming
'POLICE BRUTALITY! POLICE BRUTALITY! YOU'RE BREAKING MY
FUCKING ARM!'. Haven't been able to get back to sleep since
:/ You think people around here would learn not to fuck with
Special Branch by now.

Anyway, the last DVDs I bought were Alias S2, The Sum Of All
Fears and Infernal Affairs.

I bought the Apocalypse Now Redux the other day... it's
long. Very long. I hate the worthless little slip of paper
that comes with it, I expected at least two slips of
paper... one with the chapters, another with, you know, a
little something.

I was really hoping for "Hearts of Darkness" the docco to
come as a 2nd disc with Redux. Great film, one of my
favourites.

the last dvd I bought was "curb your enthisiasm S1" which is
hilarious. I've read that there's plans for Larry to begin
shooting Season5 next january.

yes hobbes, I did!

it wasn't half as scary as it could've been. I have mixed
feelings about it. some of the "demon imagery" is excellent,
but used rather strangely (a lot of it in the beginning,
then it kind of drops away, then it returns a bit more).
over the whole, the shooting on the film is great. and I
really liked how music is used sparingly, kind of
refreshing.

SPOILERS CONCERNING "JACOB'S LADDER":

I did like how the whole 'Ladder'-story seemed to be kind of
untrue - if that would've been the gist of the story, it
would've been shit.
however, I don't know how I feel about the whole "he's dead
and imagined his whole life after Vietnam" story. I haven't
figured out how this works, or what it means yet, in my
head.
