audio gear

i will shortly receive money from my grandmother (which is
becoming really generous, as she fears she will die soon -
which i hope not), so i'm thinking of buying audio gear:
cd player, amp, speakers (since i only have two portable cd
players for now, both a bit defective) and *maybe* a second
set of headphones, even though i think the ones i have now
are very good (they just need to be repaired quite often
since i use them all the time, that's one of the reasons why
i'm considering of buying a second pair).

do you have any recommendations for this?

marantz is a good brand from what i heard?

Yeah "Marantz" has always been ahigh quality brand.
Their stuff last.
My dad still has a Marantz stereo system from when he was in
my age and it still sounds great. Crisp sound.

Go for rotel and tannoy speakers.

Amp and CD player, comes with phono stage so you won't need
to buy one if you need to add a turntable. Amazing sound,
although might be a bit bright for some people.

Dali, Audiopro, Infinity, Tannoy and B&W all have really
good speakers... for the rest of the things I'd have to know
if you want surround or stereo...

ok.. if you want to watch dvds in surround-sound, I'd
recommend you to get the Harman/Kardon dvd25 dvd-player.. it
recieved top-criticism, and it is very easy to make
zone-free. I've got one, and I'm really satisfied with it..
another plus is that it has progressive scan, so you can get
the best out of any plasma-tv or projector that supports
progressive scan and component-cable connection.
surround-reciever: the Yamaha RX-v -series have also
recieved good critiques (I also have one of these.. the
rxv440), and they are equally good at surround and stereo.
none of these two cost much for the quality.

if you want stereo, I think I'd recommend you marantz for
amp.. I have the PM6010OSE right behind me now, and it
performs GREAT! You should probably get cd-player from
marantz as well if you get this... other brands for stereo
are Classé, but they are very expensive... Harman/Kardon
aren't that good for plain stereo (their dvd25 is better for
regular stereo than the equivalent normal cd-player..
strange...), and they have certain unpractical solutions if
you buy entire sets... Yamaha isn't anything you'd go for in
regular stereo either.. also stay away from those bose -
surround with only two speakers thingies...

speakers... all of the speakers can be put in a surround
system, but for plain stereo, Dali and B&W are probably
among the best. I have a few B&Ws here, and they have great
sound.. they are, however an older model. I have two
Audiopro Focus SA-5, which I think are GREAT! Even though
they are two-way, they have a bass that overlaps most
subwoofers, and they're amazingly clear for this
price-range! My friend has infinity alpha, and they are half
a notch worse than the audiopros, but the difference is
hardly noticeable...
