Turntables....

I'm going to buy some new turntables and i have a few
questions maybe some of you guys and ghouls can help me
with.

should i buy a direct drive or a belt drive?
what brand? (technics me thinks)
where to buy them?

any other tips would be great like good needle tips and
stuff so i won't go cutting up my vinyl too bad. thanks

direct drive are probably best for your average turntable,
but belt drive is fine unless you are scratching. the
highest priced audiophile turntables are belt drive.

as he says... direct drive for scratch and fun vinyl antics.
Belt drive is for low-noise sound reproduction, and is
therefore more commonly used in high-end.

I've got technics 1210, and I'm VERY satisfied with it..
however, if you want lots of extra stuff (+/- 50% pitch
(optionally without the pitch changing...)) and a bit
stronger, the Numark TTX is probably your best shot.
However.. I always say: test the turntables.. find which one
works best when YOU use it!

where? probably the nearest web-shop.. I'm not so sure about
usa, but here in norway, they are 1000 kroner (5-6 kroner =
1 dollar) cheaper on the web...

mine is a technics sl-bd22
a little semi-auto belt driven thing. it would be better if
it wasn't p-mount, the arm is kind of dinky

yea my buddy beck told me that once. thanks for all the
info. i want to learn how to scratch so i'm just going with
a direct drive. i know your going to say test them but what
works really good in that realm?

1210 are the classics. I'm extremely satisfed with it, but
the numark ttx is stronger and has more options...

Its a red light that shines onto the part of the table that
spins. The side of the spinner has different cirlces on it,
but when the light hits the side while its moving, it will
look like there is one circle thats standing still if the
rpms are right. This is just a complicated way of telling
you how fast the record is playing, but it looks cool.

now how about needles or stylus's? I've heard the popular
kinds that most dj's use wear the shit out of the records
and i should probably buy a decent set of needles. Are
Stanton decks decent? Just curious.

yeah, ortofon is a leader, but

it all depends what do you want to do :

- for scratching - i recommend technics, plus ortofon, there
is no better mark

just for listening - you can have simple model, i have
Numark TT1650, which wasnt too expensive ( 100pounds ) , but
i bought it for listening purposes - and its great.

really , theres no need to spend money for gadgets like
those lights, and other special features. imo, of course.

all turntables should nowadays be designed with a RIAA-amp,
a digital out and without a grounding cord - hello! - it´s
2004!

hello! its 2004, and almost all decks have a ground lead!
Why use a digital out on the turntable? Ok stanton decks
have it, but just buy those if you need it.

A DJ will plug into a mixer, so the mixer needs digital out,
not the decks.

An audiophile wouldnt use digital, but oxygen free copper
balanced leads into their expensive hifi, all analogue and
solid state, big and expensive.

Someone who wants to sample a record /listen to records,
should buy a cheap turntable with internal preamp, or if
they want to spend a tiny amount more than virtually nothing
they could get a belt drive deck, like a cheap gemini or kam
or something and a cheapo mixer, which would work out a lot
better for the wanna be sampling musician in the longer
term.

Alternativly, they could buy a soundcard with a phono input
(they exist) or an MPC4000 with a phono input, or an
inexpensive riaa equalising preamp.

haha, dave_g - you got a point.

For my needs a digital out (like on the stantons I´ve
checked) would ease the process of transfering my 12"´s to
my mac. But the price doesn´t really match the use, (and I
probably wouldn´t hear the difference!) so I recently
bought a turntable with a built in RIAA & analogue
connections and it sounds great....

belt drive all the way

look for a linn sondek lp12 on ebay (or any linn turntable
for that matter) it will be a whole different listening
experience to a direct drive

or you can get brand new "Project" turntables for little
over £100
