I don't care what anyone says, this is the best floyd album... great story, great music... just strong all through imo...
I remember when I first bought this I used to listen to the whole thing in bed every night... great stuff!

how old were you when you listened to it for the first time? because one says you wont get into the album if you are over 14 when you listen to it for the first time.

That's such a catchy tune. Addictive. Especially hypnotic is the visual in the movie where the students are being ground into worm meat or something.

This was the first Floyd album I listened to - I believe I was 14 at the time. I would not say it was their best album, my favourite is PIPER AT THE GATES OF DAWN, but it is an excellent release.

yeah, but I've never really seen it as a teenage album... to me it's always been about coming to terms with childhood pain as an adult, and trying to get past that and move on...
and yes, Meddle is a great album!

For me it is a dualistic album - part of the time it deals with the pain of losing his father during World War II, part of the time it deals with his guilt concerning the madness of King Syd (Barrett), the founding member of The Screaming Abdabs, aka The Pink Floyd.

i think roger waters described the whole statement of the wall as something like that: things in life affect you in either a negative or a positive way.
the protagonist of the wall, pink, becomes isolated, because there happen certain things in his life like the death of his father, that get him to build up this wall.
negative experiences are metaphorically portrayed as bricks in the wall. the more negative experiences you have to deal with it, the more massive the wall gets until it's that high etc that you've locked yourself away from all other human beings and are totally isolated.

ace album, but i prefer the first disc of ummagumma and meddle.
have you seen the dvd/video 'floyd-live at pompeii'? it's awesome! lots of gloopy mud and close up shots of weird statues. the bit where they're being interviewed about their reputation as a drug band is hysterical - they're sitting there looking *absolutely* wankered, saying 'no, i don't think it's fair to automatically associate us with drugs, that's not what we're about' (or something to that effect). makes me chuckle everytime :D

The Wall is pretty low on my list of favorite Pink Floyd albums, though that's all relative, it's still a fine album... it's got a lot of filler... music wise, not story. The best tracks blow me away, like Waiting for the Worms and ABITW Part 2, but I usually only listen to about a third of the tracks on there when I put it on.

disk 1 is the live album isnt it? in pink floyds eyes, ummagumma was their least popular release. but the narrow way is an excellent suite of songs, and grantchester meadows is also very good.
