First test/practice tonight. This (exciting) photo has an
exposure time of about 20 minutes at f/10. Canon EOS 300D
with EF 50/1.8 II lens. I would have chosen a smaller
aperture, like 22, but in my excitement I forgot to set it.
Oh well, atleast it wasn't 1.8.

The lens got all moist before I could say "time for picture
nr2". I hope things get better when it gets colder and
hopefully darker. They say cold temperatures reduce noise.
Also, next time I'll bring a lens that actually has a
focusing scale on it. That was probably the biggest
oversight tonight.

nr2 = number two...

nr is short for number which is swedish for number.

Nr2 has some trees in it, has an exposure time of 34 mins
and 1(!) star trail hidden in the noise. I was aiming at
Polaris and was waaay off. It's nothing really, even more
boring than that first effort. It's 3:20 AM here, I'll see
if I have the will power to resize it after sleep.

At my work, where I am a relay operator for the deaf,
hard-of-hearing, and speech disabled, the abbreviation for
number is nbr. And whenever I type out a question, I type
qq. For example:

Are my legs on fire qq

Oh, and I also have to do "tone of voice". For example:

Are my legs on fire qq (sounds upset)

And let's not forget "ga" or the "go ahead" which signals
the other person to begin their response:

Are my legs on fire qq (sounds upset) ga

Blasted relay service lingo!!!

ah yes!
I made a mistake in my last post (in this thread)... the
swedish word for number is also nummer...

so it's the same word as in dutch I guess.

For further inquiries, consult www.ip-relay.com.

I'm an IP (internet protocol) relay operator, though I work
at a California Relay Center.

A lot of people use it to make prank calls. We have to read
what you type. We have to.

that's cool stuff man. I love both photography and
astronomy, so if we werent like 2000 miles away from
one-another, I would come over with a telescope, some
popcorn and comicbooks and you could bring the camera, and
we could have a sleepover.

I like the idea of sleepovers. there's something cute about
them.

joke already)

I tried to think of things to do while your exposure has its
course.

1. Spot any aircraft among the stars.
2. Spot any aircraft flying into your picture. They can
potentially ruin a nice trail photo, since their trail will
not match the others.
3. Bring something to lie down on and gaze at the sky. This
might actually motivate to make longer exposures. According
to the manual the 300D can last 2.5H with one battery..
4. Survive the city.

That's about it. I was in a park about 10-15 mins from my
house. First I see this psycho practicing with his throwing
knives against a tree. Detour. Then there were people still
partying after a hot day. They'd probably been there all
day.

Zephyr, you're welcome. You come to my place :)

Pic number 2. EOS 300D with EF-S 18-55 @ 18mm, f/22.
Exposure time is 34mins. I reduced the reds in PS a tad. One
frikkin trail! I took this with the kit lens because it was
the only other lens I had with me. The 50mm fogged up pretty
quick during the first shot.

sleepovers are the best! and Paco, keep your schedule
reasonably open should the price of air-fare to sweden drop
dramatically. ;)
