Minidisc Field Recording?

I'm considering buying some sort of minidisc recorder and a
mic for making recordings for sampling. Does anyone here
have any advice for the best models to go for / good but
cheap mics? Just how would i go about transferring
recordings to my PC (just plug the output from the minidisc
into my sound card input)? How much is this going to set me
back?

All recommendations gratefully welcomed. I know i can count
on you, xltronic peoples.

Hahaha yeah that would be cool. I really want a small
directional mic for recording conversation and quiet sounds
on the sly, though. I'm sneaky like that.

I really can't wait until I can start recording all the
sounds I come across... I'll be taking the thing every
where.

....aaaaaaaaaaand *bump*

I would be appreciative if those "in the know" could help
out though. I don't want to blow loads of money on rubbish
gear.

from what I've heard, minidiscs aren't very good for
recording purposes, seeing as they compress using ATRAC.

Dang. Is there any other medium you know of offering better
quality, portability and widespread compatibility?

the ATRAC system used on minidiscs works by only
recording the sounds audible to the human ear, thus saving
valuable space.

i'll check the model of my MD-mic, as it's pretty damn fine,
and not massively expensive either.
i've used ti to record all sorts of things; from interesting
sounds to rough cut's of acoustic guitar tracks (with
vocals) that a friend of mine needed recording once. all
very good quality. i've had it a few years, so that
particular model should have come down in price by now.

Hmmm, ATRAC doesn't seem all that bad, more like a VBR
system than a standard lossy bitrate. I'd be grateful for
model numbers etc mister milk hall, that's exactly what i'm
looking for.

they are more than ok for recording, they can edit
recordings too. you can have up to 254 tracks on one MD.
shuffle it - you'll be surprised. i record
everything, evryday. i recommend you to find some older
models, mzr37,mzr50 or something liek liek that, cause they
have plug for stereo mic,so there's no i hear rrecording in
only one headphone thing, but it's ok if you plan to edit
everything on the computer.
anyway check
www.minidisc.org
and read as much as you can
