basically it's "evil" toward its workers (low wages) but "good" toward customers (low prices) (though there may be indirect negative effects which will eventually effect the customers economically). But I don't know details and information on this tends to be biased by either unions or walmart supporters. It's the biggest company in the world. It uses it's power.. for example it forced maria carey or someone to exclude some lyric about "buying guns at walmart" before they'd sell it in their stores. I don't know the real deal in 3rd world countries with them. Maybe people there are happy to have ANY work, or maybe walmart's evil and greedy and pays "slave" wages.

The main concern with people about walmart is the "corporate america" vs "working america" and the disparity of wealth between the two it seems.

wal-mart actively censor artists - Eels couldn't sell the original form of their album "daisies of the galaxy" there, because it contains a song where the word "shit" is used and one song that is named "it's a motherfucker", with the word "motherfucker" being used repeatedly. they wanted E to bleep out those words, etc.
he thought it was very funny and I think he used some silly noise to bleep the "shit" and actually recorded a completely new version of "it's a motherfucker" called "it's a monstertrucker", actually singing the word "monstertrucker" too. it makes no sense within the song, but there you go.
so on one side this makes wal-mart very evil, on the other hand it creates a classic semi-collector's item for Eels-fans. but I guess the last has more to do with the creativity of E really.

Wal-Mart abuses its monopoly status. Absolute power corrupts absolutely, and they often use their control of American consumers to justify some of the worst foreign labour conditions in developing countries where many of their line of products are made.

This whole situation is a part of a larger socio-economical "natural" tendency whose climax begun with the age of information. Pseudo-globalisation that only leads to centralisation of wealth and especially power. I guess it is something that we have to put up with because our lifestyle is supported by it and we support it with our carefree way of living. Ofcourse you should keep in mind that due to that situation workers will be absolutely controlled and will eventually lose most of their rights. The whole thing will get out of hand during the next 50 years or so creating a third world in the midst of the western urban environments. Simple economical principles really.

Walmart = Evil fucks.
The only allow certain music to be sold (especially CD's with explicit lyrics). They pay employees shit. And they sell lots of low quality shit. Thats why they have a HUGE area set aside for people who need to return shit that broke or whatever.
theres more but i've got other stuff to do.

Someone predicted that it would eventually "collapse under its own weight" like mcdonalds.
Another person predicted that a sort of cycle would occur where non-union would become more and more dominant until, when it got bad enough, the workers would organize into a union again.
Allegedly, they make their workers watch anti union videos which is effectively attempting to brainwash. Speaking of which, I am tired of having a brain.

£1 in every £8 spent in UK shops is spent at tesco.
at least we don't have a walmart monopoly situation yet. but it will get worse unless Labour have the balls to significantly raise the minimum wage in line with other EU countries.

I think if minimum wage is increased it will favour the already powerful chains and completely destroy smaller concerns.

naturally such a rise in minimum wage must be accompanied by government subsidies for the smaller companies. (these already exist, but i forget what they are called.)
the money for expanding this could be provided by increasing corporate tax, which in britain is among the lowest in the world.

we need to keep corporate tax down because there are no british industries as such and we need to keep foreign companies in the UK.
