i just made a draft for a cd cover for a friend of mine,
it's still very rudimentary but the direction is already
clear i think.

could you guys maybe tell me if this totally sucks, and if
so, why?
i know.. it's amateurish.. it's a only draft to be given to
a proper designer anyways

front
back

it looks amateurish because of the lettering, which looks
very "I did it on my computer", which you ofcourse did, but
there you go.

the style of the thing is a bit too '80s for me.

dunno about the 80ties thing though

i think it looks really good. maybe you should indeed screw
around a bit with the font though. otherwise, great.

i like the cover, but i would have been more consistant with
the capitalization. i think it looks better with capital
letters in this case.

the back is cool as well, but i would suggest eliminating
the numbers altogether.

the photo's are fine if thats the kind of style you'r going
for but the typography definately needs sorting out.

For an example of excelent gritty typography look at the
nin.com website.

it looks like art for an 80's goth band, what kind of music
is it?

are really bad, ok

maybe This Mortal Coil.

well, this is a very local thingy, i can see that it reminds
some people of some styles it has nothing to do with.

in fact, the music does not yet exist, but this is
from guys with similar roots. different instruments
(brass+piano) though.

beautiful

the problem is that the goths tried to be authentic with
their limited means, thats what we have in common. the
artwork reflects that

get rid of the dead chicken, don't use black and white, use
natural colours. Basically get a differenty photo.

I like it and I went to art school so my opinion is worth
more. You might as well ask the people here about plumbing,
the tensile strength of copper and the sources of Finnegans
Wake for the all the fucking misleading use they'll be.

That as may be but your advice to the young man, who has
done quite a good job, is pointless. Don't use black and
white, change the font to some crappy NIN bollocks.... what
the fuck are you on about?

no.

i once killed one though, cut its head with a sharp knife
and held it until it stopped moving.

and thanks for the help alltohether. i will not try to
change the goth impression, cause this is just a
misunderstanding, i'm live in a different culture. rather
work on the font and make it look less computerish, it was
just an attempt anyways.

morover, the music has yet to be played, the band has still
to be formed, a friend to do it with has still to be found.

(ok the last one was a lie)

cheffe said he didn't want to give it the impression of a
gothic albumcover. not making the cover black and white
helps.

don't argue please. i don't want people to think that this
is a goth thingy, but when i think of it, goths try to fill
a similar gap, so some superficial things like color scheme
and such are similar. i'll de-goth the font, that should
help.

Definitely avoid having to use any of photoshop's layer
effects like drop shadow or outer glow, which it looks like
you've done. Work around that by using a different image,
different colours, basically i'd aim for abeter contrast of
image and text, as I'd say the positioning of text you have
there works. Also I'd suggest trying a different font. For
continuity, I'd also make both images greyscale.

i would play with the levels a bit (making the front a bit
more...not so flat) and the pic on the back is just too
bright (interfering a bit with the typography)
