I'm three weeks away from leaving Oz for the UK, where I'm hooking up with my mate and going on a free-style Scandinavian driving holiday/invasion...........we're hoping to see wilderness, mountains, fjords(!) etc. etc.
Anyone have any "must see" locations? Or general advice? We're not so much looking for tourist-style places, more spectacular scenery.............
many thanks in advance...........

Sido: You're wrong. You're thinking about the nordic countries (sweden, norway, finland, denmark and iceland).
Scandinavia- the scandinavian peninsula, ie norway and sweden OR the collective term for sweden, norway and denmark. It's both of those..

Oh, and the recommendations. If the weather is nice you should definitely visit the archipelagos of Stockholm and/or Gothenburg. They're both amazing in the summer and you can't find that sort of nature in many places (Sweden, Finland and Chile, that's about it really). I used to go all the time with my parents when I was a kid.
Other than that I'd say that Norway has a more dramatic and beautiful nature than Sweden. You seem to have it pretty well pinned down, fjords, mountains, all that shizzle is nice as fuck..
I'd go to Stockholm too 'cause it's a nice summer city and the inner city is built on islands which makes it a bit different from most big cities in Europe.

Google schmoogle, hehe.. I checked and double-checked in a dictionary and it says I win, you lose..;)
Eh, it also say that the Faroe Islands is a part of the nordic countries (two definitions of that one as well, one with the other without). I'll be damned..

Thanks zetre, thats the type of thing i'm after................... have you had any experience camping at that time of year? Is it a possibility?.......... i'm experienced in hot/arid-environment camping/ hiking/ trekking, but the cold stuff will be new to me..... not looking at anything 'ard-core, but a few overnights hikes might hit the spot.

Camping is quite easy, at least in Sweden. If you find a spot that's nice and a bit secluded you can put your tent up without being bothered or you ca go to a camping site but ten you'd ave to pay a fee and fee are the devil..
Just remember to bring a sleeping bag, some sort of anti-mosquito shit and a big fire..and hot dogs..
The nights usually get pretty cool in summer as well..

Scandinavia is: Norway, Sweden and Denmark. No more discussion. If you visit Scandinavia, you don't come for the big cities, right? When you visit Norway, Skip Oslo, and go to the western part with the fjords, and the city of Bergen. Travel north, through the city of Trondheim, and above the artic circle. From the city of Bodø, you take the ferry/Hurtigruten to the Lofoten Islands.

Bah. I can see why people are confused. A search of the word "Scandinavia" gives tourist info on countries like Iceland, Finland and the Baltic countries. But check out an atlas, and not travel pages.

if you were to take the exact core scandinavian countries then it would just be sweden and norway because denmark isn't on the peninsula and because denmark isn't on the peninsula but is still a scandinavian country, finland, the faroe islands and iceland might just as be scandinavian countries...

britannica online
SCANDINAVIA
"Region of northern Europe, usually defined as comprising Norway, Sweden, and Denmark.
It is sometimes used more broadly to include Finland and Iceland. Norway and Sweden occupy the Scandinavian Peninsula, though Denmark is part of the North European Plain. The Scandinavian peoples are linked by cultural similarities, and they speak a closely related group of Germanic languages."
for example finnish is not a germanic language. i find finns to be more related to the baltics/russians.
i guess it all depends on how you see things.
